Leupold/Vortex Users?

Seems every forum has a thread on this and they are all over the place on reviews/recommendations; so I thought I would start one here.

Those of you who own Leupold and Vortex models that are comparable, what do you think?

What Vortex models would be comparable with VX2 and which with VX3. I’m looking at variable powers in the 14X or possibly 20X max range.

I’m also looking for a decent 3X9 in a lower cost scope.

I will be comparing the higher end scope to a Leupold VX-III 6.5-20X40 LR with side focus and fine duplex. I will be comparing the lower cost scope to a Leupold VX-I 3-9X40.

Vortex prices appear to be nearing Leupold. I don’t want to spend that kind of money and be disappointed.

These will both be used on various target shooting rifles from .22 to .308. I don’t hunt.

If you haven’t used both feel free to leave your comments also, I just wanted to try to contact those that had owned both.

I own both and like them both.

I'm liking Vortex more at the present.

Diamondback = VX2

Viper (PST) = VX3 or Mark IV quality.

Also have their StrikeFire on a AR and have been impressed by it's quality as well.

For a low cost budget 3-9x40, I've been very happy with my Vortex Crossfire II. I chose the plain "V-Plex" reticle. It's held zero well enough for me. Glass is very clear and bright, field of view isn't terribly constricted at 9x.

For less than half the cost of a similarly specced Leupold, I'm happy, and moderately comforted by the "VIP" warranty.

If you want a "budget" Leupold for the 3-9x40 option, buy a Redfield. Made in the USA, same factory as Leupolds, just no fancy gold ring to worry about B)

I don't have super expensive scopes on my 22's, they wear BSA Sweet 22's, I've been pretty happy with em.

I own both leupold varix-III 6.5x20 and the vortex 6.5x20. The vortex is mil dot and has more adjustment to it. Both are about equal in low light and mirage.

The last leupold I bought and really felt I got my money's worth was a varix-III 4.5-14x50 very good low light scope for coyote.

I am a pretty big vortex fan these days.

I'm looking at one of the Leupolds for down the road. I was at Bass Pro last week looking at a few scopes and I was squinting at some of the prices. Then I had a reality check: I shoot with Nikon camera lenses...why in the hell does spending up to $500 on a rifle scope with good glass seem unreasonable?  :screwy:

Just bought a Vortex Viper PST 4-16x50 FFP MRAD. Haven't shot with it yet, but seems solid, and has great glass on it. Plenty of adjustment as well.

I took three deer with a Vortex Diamondback 4-12x40 this year. I have owned a VX-II in the past and honestly I like the Vortex just as much if not more. Mainly for the price difference. They are both great scopes with a lifetime warranty. I have heard awesome things about the PST's as well.

I got a screaming deal on mine a few months ago. If you decide on the Diamondback give Optics Planet a call with the model number you are looking for and ask them what the lowest they'll take is. They knocked quite a bit off of mine and I got it for $145 shipped.

i've compared the Vortex PST to a Comparable Leupold, if you can call them comparable. The Vortex smokes it in the feature department. The main difference is the a first focal plane PST is comparable in price to a second focal plane Leupold. D&T was stocking some of the Vortex PST line. I would call and see what they have, so you can put your eyeballs on one.

I have a PST 6-24x50 FFP, and wouldn't trade it for anything in the Leupold line. The leupolds look really good, but so does the PST. If I had money falling out of my butt, I might replace it with  one of the higher end scopes like Nightforce or S&B.

Now for the DaveTN twist... The Vortex PST isn't US made. :)

That hurts my 'Merican pride every time I read it on the scope...... Then I eat some deer jerky I made and it all feels better.
