The Chinese are not going to open fire on one of our carriers. Although it might be tough for them to hold back if Obama starts lobbing missiles around. There is no immediate threat to us. Obama would be making an attack in retaliation for crimes it is not clear who committed. Isn’t that what he said Bush did?

The Russians cause me the most concern. This could end up a lot like the Cuban missile crisis. That may well be what he wants, but he won’t come out of it looking like Kennedy did. The Russians won’t be so quick to blink this time.

Countries are moving the most advanced military weapons systems in the world into that area because Obama is making threats he has no business making. One small incident could cause a lot of damage.

China is a superpower both militarily and economically; if they “wanted a piece of us” they would rip a big piece off. They don’t want that.

China is the new kid on the block. Their top generals already want to go to war against us, but currently do not have the capability and resources they need to succeed. Down the road they are far more dangerous than Russia has ever been. Our military is severely weakened at this point with the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan putting major wear and tear on all of our equipment and troops. With sequester slowing down repairs on many weapons systems, ships, aircraft  and development of new systems our military is in a serious state today.

I do not think we need to attack Syria at this point. If BO was going to attack, the appropriate time was immediately after the gassing and positive verification Assad had used them. OB has cost the US all of its credibility with friend and foe alike. Saying he would attack and not doing so immediately was an utter failure on his part and makes us the laughing stock of the world.

Why would they want that? What is it they want to do?

That may be, but our #1 line of defense is still out there. We have 18 ballistic submarines each with 24 missiles capable of reaching targets nearly 5K miles away with pinpoint accuracy.

What starts any war or military confrontation? Power, domination, control, etc. The Chinese military is being held in check by the civilian government today, but how long will that last. As mentioned by others, China backed North Korea and later Vietnam. Their military feels they are powerful enough to start a war with us and win. Today they are not technologically advanced far enough to maintain and sustain long engagements especially in distant conflicts. They are building a massive cyber capability that will enable them to access weapons systems like the ones used on our submarines, aircraft, etc. The submarines cannot function if their weapons systems and communications systems are being hacked by the Chinese or any country using cyber warfare.

They are stealing our technology and producing weapons that will eventually be equal to or superior to ours. China and Russian stole the look down shoot down capability we developed and has implemented it in many of their new aircraft. Far too many of our ships, aircraft, military units are being cut to the point of not being fully operational. With OB in office cutting military spending and the sequester cutting military spending we will have a very hollow military on the level it was under Carter or possibly worse.

Our ballistic missile submarines are a great tool, but they are not the solution solver if China finally decides to act. Also, if they are not adequately staffed and maintained they will  be a limited factor. We have many ships and air wings today that are so understaffed that they cannot properly function as cohesive units and be deployed.

Did Joe China ever put catapults on his carrier? I heard it was without.

They do not and will not add catapult to their jump deck carrier. They are currently developing two new carriers that will have catapults. Their biggest current problem is a quality aircraft to use carrier based. Their only option currently is their carrier aircraft J 15 which is similar to Russia's SU 33 carrier based aircraft. The J 15 is superior in many respects to all US aircraft other than the F 22 or F 35. The main problem is the avionics and radar systems. This aircraft also has limited range and is heavy for a carrier based aircraft. They currently do not have air to air refuel capabilities on their first carrier that greatly limits its abilities .

They are working on all of these issues and that is one reason they are not currently a major threat to our military assets, but they are rapidly developing the capability and will be a major pain in the butt for us in the near figure. Edited by rmse9

The primary problem as reported by DefenseNet last year was the engines. No performance. Under arms trade treaties, Russia could not sell them the proper Engines. "Supposedly" they are using the same engines as in the Mig 21, as far as Avionics, no one knows what they have in them. One thing we do know for sure, 24 months ago (Or so) someone hacked into DoD Computers and downloaded the complete specs for the F-22 and F-35 Avionics. Supposedly it was suspected to be the Chinese. Harrier Jump Jets served the British well against Argentina, nothing wrong with them. Catapults are outdated tech anyway. Our newest class, the Gerald R Ford Class carriers, no longer use a steam catapult. The Nimitz Class Carriers are the last to use them. It is a catapult in a sense, but it is called an Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System and only has the appearance of a steam turbine catapult. Other than that, catapult's are gone, and the next class of Carriers are going to be designed with only improvements in Electromagnetic Launch Systems to make the flight dekcs cleaner and smaller. (And the Islands smaller)

The Chinese are a lot further ahead than anyone is giving them credit for. They stripped and completely rebuilt a Russian Carrier from the waterline up in less than 3 years with all new technology, they were launching Aircraft within 6 months and no one knows for sure whats in those planes.

According to an article on DefensNet and posted on Mil.com just about 8 months ago, a DN insider who spoke with Chinese Admirals claims they can now build a complete Carrier ready for Combat every two years using new manufacturing and design techniques they developed themselves..

One thing I have seen though. Their "5th Generation" Tank. Nice job putting plain plate Armor on a turret over an M-60 Hull and adding 50 year old gun technology. next thing you know their going to be using coincidence rangefinders, then we will really be in trouble.

It takes us about 5 years to build a new carrier.
