Is this real?  Any gearheads on here that keep track of this stuff?

 

I've been wanting a diesel vehicle to convert to run on filtered (or new) cooking oil.  But this would be a nice alternative.  Maybe even better.

So far, it still takes more energy to create free hydrogen than you get from using it to generate electricity, run an engine, etc..  I don't know how we're going to get around that problem.  But heck, the sun runs on hydrogen it, so why can't my Ford?  :D

it is a neat concept. not nearly as cheap as fossil fuels but that's the same reason we don't sun on wind or solar or many other available sources as primary power sources.

You might want to look into gasification. Run your vehicle on wood.

 

Make sure you have a source for the cooking oil before you get that route. Though I have to say, running a diesel is nice in its own right.

Thanks for that link. I'll check it out.

And I actually have been looking into wood gasification recently. Seems more viable. IIRC, people were using it during WWII because of fuel rationing.

you can run an engine on -ane gases or hydrogen.  Hydrogen is harder to come by naturally.  You can produce flammable gas easily enough -- hydrogen burns cleaner but that is the only advantage to it over the others, any of the others will do.

 

If fuel gets too high we will see more solutions.   There are many, many ways to solve the gasoline problem, we just have not yet reached a point for the price/supply to drive people to shift tech.

You'dathunk the doc would have gone with gasification. Wouldn't a de-lorean look great with a huge balloon on top?

 

Hmm, that gives me another idea for achieving 88mph
