Frog Gigging

Any of you do this?

I took my son last night, and we brought home 4 frogs. We should have gotten many more, but he's never been, and I haven't been in about a quarter of a century. I think we'll do better next time.

My wife also decided to tag along, and along the way we picked up some cousins on her side. The art of surprise was pretty much lost, but we did have a great time.

Next time we'll leave the air rifle at home and take another gig instead. Even a 20 cal Benjamin won't anchor a mature bullfrog.

It ain't as easy as it sounds is it? We used to go when I was a kid. Mom would fry'em up for us. Tastes better than chicken.

Used to go numerous times a year. I always used gigs any type of gun took the fun out of it for me.

Walking ponds, wading creeks, & floating rivers. I have a 10' flatbottom I got just for it.

I remember the first time I went. We had been in the boat for awhile and had got a few frogs.

It's all quite, and out of no where there is this big smack in the water like just a few feet away, heck I bout jumped plum out of the boat. My brother and another friend just busted out laughing. I said what the h*** was that? Turns out it was a beaver smacking the water with his tail. Sheez

Haven't been in a while. Glad to hear ya'll all had a good time.

Wow, I ain't been frog gigging in about 25 or 30 either. I remember how much fun it was, though. Stuff like this was all me and my dad and my uncles ever did on the weekends when I was growing up.

We mostly waded creeks when we went. Y'all know how late it gets dark in the summer. We'd get started around dark and sometimes not come home til 2 or 3 in the morning.

...good times!

It's been many years since I've been frog gigging! Never have used a gun of any kind. Always a gig.

Haven't thought about frogging since we left Florida. Little town next to us had a frog festival that was always protested by the bunny hungers. Google Fellsmere Frogleg Festival.

My favorite meat is crab legs, shrimp and frog legs! I never met a frog I didn't like!

As a matter of fact, I have a pond in front with bull frogs but... They never get big enough to my liking and worth my while? Probably because of an over population of bass, turtles and snakes?

Now you got my mouth watering so thanks a lot!

Last time I went frog hunting in a 10 foot jon boat with "three" people on board I wasn't very popular. The guy in the rear paddled us around the large pond, the guy in front spotlighted them and gigged them. My job in the middle was to take the gigged frog off the gig, bash it's head against the boat. It was the spur of the moment when we went while out camping so we didn't have any bag to put them in... The gig was made out of a three fork limb.

Long story short, we gigged about a dozen frogs and I had about 4-5 come back to life and jump back into the water. I wasn't very popular that night!

Prior to that I always heard a frogs eyes would shine? I was thinking like an animals eyes, like bright? But those frog eyes were barely visible, just a dull white you have to concentrate on.

Frog-less in NW Tennessee.

Sorry for going off topic but... Speaking of frogs...

Bet you young whipper snappers on here don't know who "Froggy" was on "The Little Rascals"!

I know, I need to keep my mouth shut and stay on topic!

The pic was vertical when I saved it to photobucket. Then, it was sideways. I rotated it and replaced it with the original. That fixed it in photobucket, but it's still sideways when I post it here. What's up with that?
