That is so awesome!  We look at those things now and think "duh, that is how you would do it."  But put yourself in their shoes thousands of years ago with what they had to work with.  The guys that came up with those machines were as bright as the guys coming out of MIT today.

Agree completely, improving on a technology is fairly easy as compared to creating something useful out of nothing.
