I'll be running down to the wood shop in Franklin this weekend (cant rememeber the name of the place) to pick up some maple burl or something else to craft a new set of grips for my 1911.

I know how i'm going to do it and i know what i want them to look like. If anyone else has ever made their own grips post pictures!

I've seen some customer's custom grips that have turned out really nice. One guy does such a nice job that he has even started a side business doing them.

Good luck and post some pics when you get them done!

Make sure you put those suckers on there with green Loctite too!

I'll be sure to post pics.

How are you starting?

Are you using the existing grips for a pattern?

If you're going to take pics, I'd love to see the work in progress to see how you went about it from start to finish.

Existing grips as a template, yes. I will be sure to take work in progress pics for everyone to see. :)

I'll start off with maple burl blanks (or whatever wood i end up liking the most). There is a store in Franklin that i frequent that sells exotic wood. All of my wood projects i get my wood there. Cabinents, clocks, etc. Should be a piece of cake.

Chocolate,Coconut,or Red Velvet?:)

If it ends up as maple burl.. the cake will be a chocolate\white mix.

Must be an oreo.

Update. I'll write a little about the process tomorrow. Here are a few pics of the project leading up to the finished product. Wood is Bolivian Rosewood. Not as fancy as the stock cocobolo grips from Springfield... but that wasnt the point. The whole process... especially with the sanding took around 6 hours. The grips, to me, give it more of a classic look. I have a few more coats of stain to apply and then a coat or two of poly.
