Not sure which category this falls under, but I have a pistol that I was thinking about selling. I found a crossbow on Craigslist that I want. The guy will consider trades for guns. problem is, he is in Kentucky, I'm in Tenn. Any way I could make this work, legally?

Yes.  You send the gun to an FFL in KY and he gets a background check and picks it up.  He sends you the bow directly.  If it was me, I would wait until the gun gets to the FFL before sending the bow, or if possible and you are close enough, meet him at the FFL in KY and do the swap there.  He will still need to get a background check at the FFL.  Do not just swap him for it directly.

Or take it there and do it, but Hozzie's got it -- it must be received by him through FFL in KY, it's the only legal way with a handgun.

Random question, sort of related ... would a long-gun have to go through an FFL? Or just a handgun?  I know I can purchase long-guns in GA and other states even though I'm a TN resident.

You as a Tennessean can legally buy a long gun through FFL in at least 40 of the 50 states and tote it home with you.

Federal law:

- Private sales of any firearm between residents of different states are illegal, no matter where they occur.

- Long guns may be received through FFL in any state.  (although some states don't allow it for non-residents, don't allow their residents to buy out of state or only in adjoining states, or only allow buyers from adjoining states -- also some FFLs won't necessary do it even where legal, but most will -- no probs around the South, unless buyer is from a state that has restrictions).

- Handguns may only be received in state of recipient, though FFL of that state.

Exceptions:

- Inheritance of any legal firearm if legal for recipient to possess it

- Loan of any legal firearm if legal for recipient to possess it (or renting, but that could be problematic AFAIK)

Private sale must go through an FFL.

The Feds and many states allow FFL’s to sell long guns to out of state buyers. But you will find many dealers won’t do it because they are required to comply with the laws of both states.
