How would you react?

Recommended Posts

I went out to eat with the family, carrying OWB, but covered with my t-shirt.  As I was walking up to pay, my holster felt funny. I reached down and realized one of my rubber belt straps had broken.  I sort of held it with my t-shirt because I wasn't sure about the remaining strap after the first one broke, and it would have hung down at an angle otherwise.

What I am looking for is advice on what my course of action should have been.

I'm not going to pretend to be an expert, but my idea would have been to brace it with your forearm. That way your arm and hand is down by your side in a natural position that wouldn't attract attention. That said, grabbing it with your hand is better than having it fall onto the floor, since you didn't know about your second strap.

On a side note, you might consider going with kydex. Very strong, thin, and light. RKBA makes a fantastic one.

I had that happen too, I did the same thing as UncleJak. I moved out of the way into a secluded area of the store I was in, unholstered my weapon and put it in my pocket. No harm no foul and no one knew anything happened.

I would have went into the bathroom and tried to fix it ... not in public ..that's for sure..

I  think most people.. when seeing a holstered gun , its not a big deal.. but seeing a man fiddling with his gun, it might look to them that you are trying to pull it out and do god knows what with=panic and stupid people yelling..

You hit on the two things that went through my mind.  I was afraid it would hit the floor since I wasn't sure of the condition of the remaining strap.  Second, I didn't want to be fiddling with it and have people freak.  I did what Twin said and after I got it under control, braced it with my forearm.  Not exactly natural, but it didn't go anywhere.  Looking back, I probably should have gone to the bathroom and moved it to a pocket, but I was already at the front of the restaurant and the bathrooms were in the back.

I have resolved to examine my straps about once a week now.  The remaining one had a crack in it, so I replaced that one too.  I like the rubber straps because I move the holster from one pair of pants to another.  Kydex loops don't feel as secure, and they also don't allow much flexibility.  The rubber straps don't scuff up my belt either.

Yea, it happened to me at our local Walmart not long ago. Wearing my heavy 1911 one of the snaps came undone on a high dollar cqc holster. I was making my way toward the front restrooms to fix the problem but entered an isle with no one there so I quickly re-snapped it.

In retrospect, maybe with all the security cameras I should have continued to the men's room.

I'm not a fan of OWB snap holsters anymore.
