Food plots

It's almost time for deer plots.  I planted a small one this spring and it didn't do so hot.  The area doesn't get much sunlight is probably the issue.  I sowed some clover from the co op.  Does anyone have a good food plot for fall that doesn't need much sunlight?

I think clover will do better in the fall than it did in the spring. That's been my experience anyway.

I'll be watching this thread to see what advice you get. I can't wait for deer season! Edited by Batman

I agree to the poster above.  I would plant clover in the fall.  We are about to plant several acres of clover in a few weeks.

We planted cowpeas and sunflowers in mid june, much later than we wanted but they are all about 3 feet tall and the deer LOVE them.

Really looking forward to the season myself!

Old thread, new season.

I had something come up to divert my time this summer, but I'll be planting soon. What works in less than full sun that can be planted in August? I've always done clover in the fall. I tried buckwheat back in the spring, but it turns out that buckwheat seeds are a turkey magnet. I had dozens of turkeys until the seeds were gone, then they left just before turkey season opened :(

I might try buckweat + clover again, but I have less than full sun. WIll turnips grow in partial shade? Cowpeas? I'm assuming sunflowers need full sun :)

We have soybeans, cowpeas mixed in with some sunflowers and clover this year.   Deer are absolutely tearing up the cowpeas, they freaking love them!

I've had great luck with turnips late season. The deer leave them alone until it turns cold then they are all over them. I'll mix that with some clover, maybe some winter wheat or oats to pull them during the early season.

According to my mom, you should plant most any sort of typical decorative plants...  daylilies, liriope, hydrangeas, ... the deer will eat them to the ground every night.

Good info here.  I'll be trying to get some turnips and cow peas planted in the next week or so, hopefully not too late in the season.

Perfect time for planting... actually a touch early yet. I'll turn my fields this week and let them rest for at least a week before I put seed out.

Old Thread but still important.  Anyone planting this spring?  I thought about trying out Durana clover then drilling in some Penningtons feedin frenzy for the fall.  First time food plotter, been watching the management advantage and growingdeer.tv trying to get some tips.
