Got my brother coming down from PA for a couple of days. We like to drink when we are together but haven't been together since we were broke arse kids buying Takka vodka by the gallons. Not being much of a drinker anymore I am not sure what is good anymore. I need two suggestions, one in the 25 a fifth and one in the 50ish a fifth range. No real preference except I don't do rums, gins or flavored stuff.

Coming in from PA, give him some TN stuff... George Dickel & the other usual suspects made here in TN.

Sometimes you need to forgo the quality and do something with a little hometown flavor ;)

1st choice - Herradura Silver.......sipp'n tequila that is great ice cold from the freezer with a slight squeeze of fresh lime in a frozen shot glass. No salt required.

2nd 1st choice - el Tesoro Platinum.......fixed same as above. (Either one is fine with me..both are excellent)

Both are way too good for margaritas. Edited by Randall53

Haha Taaka. Worst night of my life was splitting a fifth with 2 of buddies while watching Platoon.

2 lessons learned:

1) Don't buy or drink cheap vodka

2) Don't take shots of said cheap vodka

Certainly in Cocke county you could find something with a local flair.

This.

The BEST I've had came from Bledsoe Co.
Dangerously, sippin' directly from the Mason, good.

Grundy Co, not so much... Edited by TN-popo

I second the TN Mason jar. I get some REALLY good stuff out of sequatchie county. Not overly strong knock you on your butt either.

I buy most of my sippin' tequila in Cozumel, but I'll have to try the ones mentioned above.

For a $25-ish bourbon, Gentleman Jack is real smooth and obviously a TN whisky. Makers 46 is a good one for a little under $50, but I also like the JD Single Barrel. Prichards Double Chocolate (has a hint of chocolate, but isn't sweet) is very nice, but hard to find and will proably cost you more than $50.

I agree. My favorite personal source happens to come from Macon County, close to the Kentucky line. A 1.5 hour drive for me, but well worth it. I tend to "stock up" whenever I visit the Lafayette area.

If you can't go "local'; there are at least 3 or 4 legal Tennessee moonshine brands available at the liquor store these days.

I always keep a couple of jars of Cocke County's finest. I'm not a fan, just always have some.

Thanks guys, think I am going to hit the liquor store and see if they don't have a couple of these for me to try in the really small bottles. Goin' local is good idea, had someone mention this to me not too long ago so I might be able to do that. 50 bucks and I could get a gallon and send him home with some. I also might have to make it a point to schedule a little trip down to Lynchburg and see what the freshest out of the barrel I can get a bottle of JD is.
As for the "legal moonshine", when I first moved up here I had a neighbor that worked in Gburg at one of them and he brought me a few jars, gotta say: It sucks, like cheap vodka (not as bad as Taaka though lol) and the flavors tasted like vodka with flavoring syrup in them...like not in good way either, like they just added it at the bottling phase and shook it up.

Every legal 'shine that I've tried tasted like crap.
