Will you want to use it as a 5.56/.223 periodically or will this be a one-time conversion? The reason I ask is because you can do this the cheap way or the slightly more expensive albeit more convenient way.

You can change out your barrel, bolt and mag followers, but my suggestion would be to buy a complete upper and swap back and forth.

Yep, the individual parts needed would probably be cheaper... but the complete upper will be much easier, and then you'll be able to swap calibers much easier, as noted.

Sure, people occasionally sell 6.8 SPC uppers used. I don't think it happens as often as people sell 5.56 uppers used, but it does happen. A quick glance at GunBroker.com shows that a complete upper will run you anywhere from $600'ish to over $1000 depending on manufacturer and kit.

Do get 6.8 specific mags. While .223 mags will work, the aluminum ones tend to bulge under the added pressure. That is why 6.8 mags are stainless. As far as uppers go, get a Cardinal Armory/Ko-Tonics upper. They are the definitive 6.8 builder. They use the 4 groove, 1:11 twist that is perfect for the 6.8.

I got a cmmg upper mid length with a 1:10, It's a tack driver.

Stag Arms sells a complete 6.8 upper that just attaches directly in seconds.... if you want both caliber's at will, I would think about this direction with your purchase.

So to switch a 5.56 m4 to 6.8 all you have to do is change the upper and maybe the mags? Nothing else?

Are you asking if you can drop a complete 6.8 upper on a 5.56 lower? Then YES.

You will need to run 6.8 mags, but other than that, you are good to go.

That's it. Just make sure you don't get the mags mixed up.

They can also share the same bolt carrier, but the bolts are different. When I had mine, I just had two so i didn't have to worry about getting them mixed up.

What does 6.8 ammo run?

About 2,400 feet per second. :D

And you can practically hear the cash register ka-ching every time you pull the trigger. About $19 for 20 rds in most places.
