Elk hunt-my first one

Recommended Posts

Well, guys, something I have always want to do should be happening this year!  Elk hunting!  I should be going to Utah to go hunting with a new found friend.  He has been hunting public land for that last 13-20 years and has invited me to go camping and hunting for a week.  I have never been before, we are just going to camp and hunt on the public land.  I have never done that kind of thing and just wondering if someone on here has some experience elk hunting.  I have asked my new friend a lot of questions and don't want to get to the point where I annoy him.  How does elk hunting differ from deer hunting?  Do they have as good of a nose as a whitetail deer....?  If you have some advice let me know, I am very excited and I do realize that I may not come home with an elk, but know it will be a lot of fun either way.  planned hunt is the week of oct 5th, after the rut.

In 2000 I was elk hunting around Pagosa Springs Co. We did a lot of walking, get a good set of hiking boots and break them in.  It was in mid Oct. no snow and the guides were wearing sneakers. The weather will dictate what to wear.  As far as gear carry as lite as possible, but have a lot of water.  If you are using horses good get use to riding before hand. Elk hunting is a great adventure. Good hunting and enjoy

The only sound advice I can give you is to NEVER use a .300 win mag with 185 grain Bergers.

:) just kidding.

My step dad and uncle did a few public land hunts out there. I remember them talking about the millions of miles they walked. Hopefully you have good knees and ankles. Good luck.
