I'm headed down there for the 1:30 HCP class today.

Wondering if anyone else is signed up, and inviting all of the Chatt members who don't have permits to come join me!

Sign up on their website, and get some actual enthusiasts in the class today.

I wanted to comment on the class after finishing it.  My previous post was done during a break, and was me expressing my frustration at some of the other students.

...

The instructor was great. Some of the other pupil's commitment to the class was less than expected. Not listening, trying to do other things. A couple of comments and questions really made you wonder why these people were pursuing a permit carry at all.

I'm not saying anyone shouldn't be allowed to take the class, but just a smidgen of knowledge about a firearm should be a prerequisite. Shooter's Depot offers handgun 101 & 202 just for people who have never even touched a firearm before.

Carry permit class is not the place to learn basic gun safety for the first time. That said, I'm glad it gets covered, because apparently not everyone who wants to carry a gun cares enough to learn the basics. A carry permit holder is expected to know everything taught in the class. My point is that they should be expected to know quite a bit more.

I did learn a couple things though The most notable being that it is legal to carry in an establishment that serves alcohol for consumption, as long as you don't consume alcohol, and you carry concealed.

The carry concealed part is a strong suggestion not the law.

I've heard from a couple people that have taken the class there that their strong suggestions come across as fact of the law.

One friend told me that they teach shoot to wound. I haven't taken any courses there but it makes me wonder.

Outstanding bunch of guys lol. That's a good one. I've had a really bad experience with John Martin and crew. In fact I think he's a dispicable person who needs to work on his customer service and people skills. If anyone would like me to elaborate please pm me and I will but I won't elaborate on here. Didn't mean to hijack the thread I just think people should steer clear of shooters depot is all.

I took my course there ... I believe it's been about 2 years or so ... Was boring yes as I had a good bit of firearm knowledge going in... Had no issues with anything taught/discussed

I can't comment on shooters depot outside of me taking the course there .... Only time I've been in the place Edited by mcordell

No matter where you take your permit class it's going to be a bit boring for those with lots of handgun experience. It is designed for novices as it should be.

My experience has been 100% the opposite of  tdoccrossvilletn's concerning Shooter's Depot. Great people including especially John Martin. I would highly recommend doing business with them. Fair prices with a knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful staff. I have introduced a bunch of people to Shooter's Depot and all of them have agreed.

For whatever reason I can't start a PM right now, but I'd be interested in hearing what you have to say.

The class is taught by local police so I would say they are just trying to avoid as many mwag calls as they can. I took mine with sgt Haskins there and it was highly recommend cc but did say that OC was legit.

Sorry, but NO.   There should be NO requirement at all, but if there must be one, it should be minimal.   On top of that, IQ tests are notoriously biased --- take me, for example, I am not all that bright but I have above average  test taking skills (budget time per problem, work the solution from the multiple choice answers rather than figure it out, those sorts of things).  If the tests were a real indication of anything, I would be a lot less of a slacker and would have amounted to something :)

And if we cannot expect people to be literate to vote, I sure as hell won't require it to fire a gun.   Which one takes understanding and the ability  to comprehend the internet and world around you ...  a) pointing a gun at the guy beating your head in or  b) following the debates and news and whanots of national politics over the 2 year campaign season to make an informed choice between 2 losers?  The answer is B, though only barely.   I mean, what are you going to read about your gun carrying, the owners manual?  Nope, the only thing in there worth anythign is the disassembly pictures.   The laws?  Even biden can't be bothered just blast em thru the door with a 12 ga slug, don't need to understand anything....
