Musicman, I've described The Mars Volta to a friend as the hipster version of Dream Theater.

Queens of the Stone Age is great too.

Is The Mars Volta a top 40 band? If so mainstream tastes sure have shifted since I quit paying attention to them.

Totally OT, but I love Paul Gilbert, too. Here's one off his latest album. This track just hs a great groove to it. Wish I could play like that!

All you need is a drill and a 2mm Dunlop triangular pick.

Worked for him!

hehehe!! It was a lot of fun to see him do that at the last G3 tour! However, I still think Petrucci rocked the hardest that night. I'm kinda' falling out of love with Satriani as of late, though. I still dig his early stuff, especially "The Mystical Potato Head Groove Thing"

I saw Petrucci back on the 2000 G3 tour, and honestly I wasn't extremely blown away by him. Don't get me wrong, the man can play, but the music didn't do a lot for me. I was a huge Satch fan back in those days, but over the last few years I've kind of gotten away from that scene. I haven't even picked up the latest Satch release; a far cry from around 2000 when I'd go and buy his new release the day it hit the shelves.

Crystal Planet is still my favorite Satch production. I think I'll be keeping an eye on his tour schedule for this album, and see if I can catch a concert in the area. Been waay too long since I caught any live music.

Oh, and as a side note, I got aftershow passes to the G3 2000 concert. Pretty cool to meet Joe and Steve afterwards. Joe's surprisingly short!

I saw Petrucci on that tour and you're right, he wasn't up to Satch performance levels at that point. Also, that was his first real tour as a solo guitarist. Remember, he was always playing with Dream Theater before that. He eventually released a solo album with a lot of the stuff he was working on during that tour and some more stuff. Again, you could tell he wasn't really used to being without a band, having to carry a whole album with just a guitar and no lyrics. This last tour (06 I think) was a lot different, I thought. He was much more in his element this time around. And Dave LaRue is a freaking beast, playing for both Satch and Petrucci, then also carrying the trio through their jams at the end. The man is an ANIMAL!! I think he's got to be one of the hardest working road warriors ever. I love his driving fingerpluck style. Wish I was 10% as good as he is.

Yea, Joe is a friggin' midget! Petrucci isn't really much better. While Steve is a kind of tall dude, he absolutely towers over Joe. Paul Gilbert is about Steve's size, and I like him better anyway. (Sacrilege to some, I know.... for some reason I just can't handle too much of Steve Vai. I agree he is technically amazing, I just don't get all of his grooves)

Steve's definitely a sort of acquired taste. His stuff sometimes wanders a good way into the eclectic territory... but I'll tell you, it's an absolute riot to watch him play live. You can tell he's having a ton of fun. I especially enjoyed watching him and Billy Sheehan interacting on that G3 tour.

Here's a much younger (and a bit plumper) me with Joe and the ex:

Cool!! Ok, weird observation of mine... Joe Satriani has to have the hairiest arms of any human alive. Could he have been that thing in those Georgia boys' freezer? Either it was him or my 5th grade teacher Ms. Clifton... she was a hairy beast as well, with a scary snaggletooth.

Might be a consequence of aging... as I continue to age, the crop of hair on my upper back continues to grow more lush. Maybe in Joe's case, the hair just migrated from his head to his arms?
