Two weeks notice...

Recommended Posts

Just a friendly reminder that squirrel season opens in two weeks.

If you have a kid, or know a kid, or are willing to passively kidnap a child, please make an effort to introduce the next generation to the joy of our sport. Just get them out in the woods, away from the electronics, for a few hours. My first hunt was for squirrels. My grandfather took me when I was 8. I still remember that first hunt. I remember how loudly the leave crunched under my feet. I remember seeing the first squirrel I ever killed and all the knowledge that was shared with me that day. I remember my daughter's first hunt. Her first squirrel. How cold it was that day and how proudly she held that squirrel up for pictures. Don't miss the opportunity to make memories that will last a lifetime.

This year is gonna suck for me. I used to be able to walk less than a hunnerd yards from the porch to a good sittin' spot, which was great, since I can't stand or walk long but not since I moved. Tree rat snipin' used to be my late in the year get away to clear the mind and reconnect. I gotta find somethin' near by and get to talkin' to the locals to see if there's somethin' I can hunt on. A lot of folks these days ain't willin' to let anyone out of family hunt their land, though and a lot of time, family, either.

Funny how I hunted the same woods for years, squirrel in late summer and deer in the fall and never thought about bumping deer. Now, I am careful about doing anything to bump deer preseason. Probably doesn't make any difference, just making sure the big smart deer don't get spookier than needed.

Squirrel hunting with a bow is an awesome challenge! Back when I could hunt with a compound bow I really enjoyed hunting squirrels with it.

Hunting grounds are scarce. every place i used to hunt islong gone and has been for several years. state hunting reserves is about allthat's left.

I normally despise hunting public land.  Yet most public land still has lots of squirrels.

Isn't it legal to float a river... no motor... and shoot squirrels from a boat? Doesn't public land run from the water a certain distance up the bank? Just trying to figure out if this is a legal yay to squirrel hunt. A good squirrel dog could be dispatched to retrieve the squirrel and bring it back to the boat. Anyone hunt this way? I understand the water can be awfully cold, if you tip the boat!

It is my understanding that you can have a motor on the boat, but you cannot be using the motor to propel forward motion when you take the shot. IE: you have to be anchored or "floating" when you shoot.

There is no "public land buffer" along waterways. You can hunt public land, otherwise open to hunting, from a boat, not underway from a motor. So you could hunt LBL from a boat. You could also get cited for shooting squirrel on my land floating down the Red River. Not that I'd care personally, just giving an example.
