Unforgiven: Lessons in Gunfighting

Recommended Posts

Most of the threads here talk about what gun, what caliber, what ammo and what knowledge of the law you will need before engaging in a gunfight. But not enough is said about the psychological mechanics and probable circumstances involved in shooting it out against a determined opponent. This article, while written for cops, makes some very interesting points to remember should you ever get into an actual showdown, using Clint Eastwood's 1992 movie, Unforgiven, as the classroom.

And here's the video clip of the climactic shootout covering the lesson material you'll need for your "final exam."

He mentions Dave Grossman's "On Killing" in the article. I highly recommend that book along with "On Combat" to anyone who takes self defense seriously. It's a scientific study of what happens to the human body and mind under the stress of combat. A fascinating read and the knowledge is invaluable. In fact, I'm going to dig up my copy and start re-reading it.

I just reviewed that book on Amazon and bought the Kindle version.  Looks like some good reading.  Thanks for the tip.

Love that scene.  I recall noting how slow and deliberate his is.  The other guys are trying to be fast and run and shoot all the same time, and aren't hitting anything.  He's just standing there, taking his time, aiming, and getting hits.
