Habitual DUI's

I'm all for first offense attempted murder. Wreck or not. Start charging people with a crime that will destroy their lives and people will stop (or at least slow down) ruining others. If you operate a vehicle under the influence, I have no value for your life because you obviously have no value for oer peoples lives. Sorry......wait, no I ain't sorry.
There is NO excuse for this. You know damn well what's happening when you take the first sip. It's no mystery.
What is a mystery is why I see the papers around here; Third offense, reduced to first with a fine.
What is a mystery is why mothers bury their babies every day because some asshat can't drink at home or get a ride.
What is a mystery is why we allow these people to continue producing CO2 and wasting precious oxygen.

I'm sorry, but that's just nuts. A lot of responsible intelligent young people make mistakes every day... I'm guessing that at some point in your life you have done something stupid, under the influence of alcohol, that could have lead to someone getting injured, maybe we should charge attempted murder.

Ohh, so lets pretend people are NOT burying their children because useless idiots lack the wisdom to stay sober or stay out from behind the wheel.

I thought I would become more tolerant with age. With age comes wisdom and patience. Unfortunately for me, the older I get, the more do NOT have patience for people and their idiocy.

As far as myself? I often wonder what life would be like had I been caught and punished for some of the things I've done. I often wish I had. As far as driving goes, I have been so hammered I couldn't properly annunciate my name. Not once was I fool enough to drive. In my young and dumb days I've slept in the yard and woke soaked in the morning dew but NEVER did I drive a car.

Seems no matter what people do wrong, there's always sympathy and excuses. Edited by Caster

I lost two of my Aunts is a single wreck. Hit head on by a DUI, he lived. I believe it was his 2nd. He got probation as it was long ago.

This past April I lost a brother in law by a 3x DUI'er also in a wreck, yup he lived too. He plead to agg manslaughter no sentence yet.

If they really wanted to stop drunk drivers they wouldn't sell cold beer in gas stations and they would pass a law that all booze has to be consumed in a private home. That would be a common sense law. Doesn't stop anyone from drinking what or how much they want and it takes the risk off the road. HEAVY penalties would be assessed to people who drink and drive. Same as if they were putting a gun to someone's head.

You know there are reasons why beer is kept cold other than because someone wants to drink it right out of the cooler, right? The problem isn't with people drinking WHILE driving, it's with people drinking THEN driving. People drink at home and get on the road all the time. Gas stations keeping beer cold is not the problem. Bars are not the problem. Alcohol is not the problem.

Making any argument other than personal responsibility is the same as supporting gun control laws that restrict carry, magazine limits, types of firearms and ammunition. Once again, blaming inanimate objects or suggesting the restriction of everyone for the actions of a few.

I'm still wondering what "personal responsibility" you are referring to because I don't see it??? I agree, people ought to have personal responsibility but if they did this thread would have no reason to exist..

People aren't exercising much personal responsibility which means it falls to the rest of society to step in and stop the carnage.

I'm all for forgiveness for one time (if no one is actually hurt) with mandatory (at the perp's expense) school...after that...5, 10, 20, then life sentences for each repeated conviction...I'm also for lowering the BAC limit even further...in fact I'm okay with 0 being the limit.

TMF, I agree whole heartedly.
Robert, I also see your point.

It does all boil down to self control and personal responsibility.

I drink occasionally and occasionally I might even be two sheets in the wind. You'll never EVER find me on the road though. Never!
I'm dumber than a bag of hammers so if I can do it, anyone can. Drink at home, or have a driver. Anything else and you suck as human being. I know that might step on a few toes around here but I don't care. If you drink, take a bunch of pills, smoke a joint, freebase crack what ever you like, go for it if it makes you happy. If you drive while under their influence, I have no use for you.
If your bills are paid, wife and kids are fed and you aren't getting violent, get wasted! That's YOUR business and no one else's, so long as the criteria are met. Drive on a public road and it becomes EVERYONE'S business.

I don't understand how the court system can allow multiple DUI or multiple misdemeanor/felons walk around/drive without harsher punishment. Jail/prison is a joke according to my future brother in law(I hate that I have to be related to him. )

Personal experience-
My fiancées brother is 32. He has 3 DUIs, multiple drug charges, assault charge, several accusations of assault on whatever hooker he dates. He's now in jail with only a year sentence for cocaine possession. After all his charges how does he only get a year? And he's fine with jail as I said. It's a vacation for him.

/end rant

Sounds like exactly that kind of people decent people have to defend themselves against.

We long ago stopped actually punishing people for criminal activity; the ultimate impact on society was entirely predictable except for those who refused to see.

It's really not that hard to understand....Money. If you had strictly enforced penaties that were a true deterence to crime then you'd have less crime. Instead you have a self-perpetuating, legal system. More crime, more cops, more lawyers, more gear, more cars, more jails, more revenue, more, more, more, and the need to put more people behind bars.  Thus more laws, thus cops are not peace officers anymore the are "Law Enforcement Officers". If we had a death penalty were they took you out back and put a bullet in your head within 72 hours of conviction and a judical review, that might be a deterent. If you got caught drinking and driving and the penalty was 11months and 29 days in the clink first offense and you lost your job and everything associated with that, might think twice before dinking and driving. There is big money in crime and making people criminals, all you have to do is look at the "War on Drugs".

I wish they would do the same for texting while driving. IMO there is a greater chance of  being killed by one of them than a drunk driver. I almost got killed in a parking lot last week and I was walking. This lady was texting ( I saw her) and she almost squeezed me in between her suv and another car

You know, none of this is really about habitual DUIs...pick out just about any "problem" we have today and it all comes back to the same thing which is the morally bankrupt society we are becoming.

Knowing the difference between right and wrong or having any moral center at all, respect for other people, believing that YOU are responsible for YOU (rather than some government bureaucrat or program), no appreciation for the value (and I don't mean money) in work and doing a job well, the belief that someone owes you something just because you haven't yet assumed room temperature, thinking that laws and rules only apply if someone is watching, the dissertation of the traditional family as  something to strive for, flushing babies down the toilote if you decide having the child would be to much of a bother. I could go on an on.

I know we've always had our problems...a part of society that simply didn't or weren't willing to play by the rules...but it seems to be almost at epidemic levels today.

When I look at the problems we face as a country today, sometimes I don't even think we deserve to save the country; just let it fall apart and hope that whoever is left alive will do a better job than we did.

What should we be doing with habitual impaired drivers.  By that I mean those ass-wipes who have multiple DUI arrests but still get in a car and drive, generally on a suspended/revoked license and of course no insurance?

Personally, I am in favor mandatory prison sentences after the first offense with the length of time increasing after each event.  First offense sentence should be harsh, like 1000 hrs of supervised community service, as most people deserve a second chance.  Second offense 2 years in jail, 3rd offense 5 yrs, 4th offense 10 years, 5 offense 15 years, etc...

turn em in to MADD. They follow every dui case from arrest to sentencing and they dont miss a beat.
