Out to 1500 yards the 300 win mag will hang right in there with the 338 Lapua and is much cheaper to shoot.

Found some Hornady AMAX locally for about $80 per 10rounds.

 

750 grain AMAX bullets, $2.25 ea. 750 grain Barnes TAC-LR, $1.75. I'm guessing one could do a little better. Big projectiles and lots of powder is gonna make it expensive. Still, the caliber just screams for reloads.

I'm a big Lehigh fan. I have some of their 300 grain .458 bullets. You can put one through a cinder block wall and it just scratches it up. You can probably load it and shoot it again.

As in no rifle at all or specific hours they will be closed??? I was headed there tomorrow to test some loads.

Correct.

 

Reason is, the 500 (from what I understood was his idea at the moment) is supposed to be right between 100 and 300.

He says always check this page (scroll down) before you come out to the range. Sometimes parts of it are shut down for things like maintenance, cutting the grass, etc.

When he showed me the range, I thought the 500 was going to be to the left (East if I recall) and was going to be a stand alone range.

Sounds like he's still in the planning stages. But all I can tell you is what he said in front of my group at orientation and safety last Sunday.

 

He mentioned he might put the 500 between 100 and 300 (which was a small space from my angle).

 

Never know, he might decide to put it where he told your group.

The owner is a competition shooter and been shooting 1,000 yards for a long time. He was not taking blind unsafe shots at 1,000.
 
He plugged in all the data in a ballistics calculator, dialed in 80 clicks, but did not hit paper.
 
We thought there might be something off with the published ballistics data from the ammo manufacturer
 
The only other possibly would be that my scope wasn't producing accurate .10 mil clicks.
 
That said, I'm also going back to a different range to test the tracking of my scope before I blame the ammo manufacturers ballistics info.

SWFA SS 20x42 .10mil.

 

A lot of 50cal guys use them and they hold up and hold zero. Never heard of any of the new .10mil scopes having any tracking issues either. But just in case, I'm going to test mine to make sure.

If you think he's charging more because of having longer ranges, that's not the case. It's more to do with upkeep and amenities.

 

Trust me, that fee is a drop in the bucket for what folks are getting. This guy has built a really nice range and at these rates, I doubt he's making a dime off this right now.

I might go down to Terry's and just use the PMC 50A ammo because afterwards,  I'd like to also check the spread on this stuff.

I'm thinking the spread will muddy the test. .224 SMK's are cheap. I would run the tracking test with a tack driver, and make spread a different test. If you're getting a 1+ MOA spread on that PMC stuff, you're gonna have to do a lot of averaging.

I mentioned it to my Buddy who also has an 82A1 and a MRAD and he is interested but only if they allow FA at that range.

I'd love to compare his BORS, to a chart I got off Barrett's web-site for ranging.

$100k is small money when you're talking about something like this. I wouldn't even want to guess on insurance costs. Just maintaining that size piece of property and buildings will chew a good sized hole in the profits. Stones River is $100 or so. I would pay the $150 for this range without batting an eye.

I, for one, will not complain about $150 to support the only 1,000 range within several hours of Nashville. I just wish I hadn't sold my .308 now.
