New 1000 yard gun range in Chapel hill.

Recommended Posts

Tempest455, our kids may get to shoot together. I'm going to put my app. in tomorrow about lunch time. I hope my equipment and I are up to the task and good to go for the 1000 yard range.

When he ask you what you plan to shoot at 1,000 (and he will) tell him you are shooting a Marlin 30/30 w/ a Barska scope!  :)

Are you taking the same gun you used at Oak Ridge?

On another note. I hope Tony will offer 1,000 yard days on the weekend. Right now it's on Thursday night. There is no way I would ever be able to make it on a Thursday night. I pretty much joined this place just for the 1,000 so I can test different loads. Hopefully they will open it up to Sat/Sun practice days.

Went today and signed up.

Let Tony fire the 50 BMG at 100 yards with PMC Bronze 50A.

I didn't see the berm before the shot, but the hole he pointed to was big enough to stick your shoe in. He said 100 yards was definitely off limits for the 50 BMG's right now. The berms are just red clay, grass isn't growing on them much yet, so its soft right now.

He did mention if Barrett put up the armor plate, he'd allow 50 BMG on the shorter ranges. He already spoke with them and they have $10k in armor plate they bought for another range that later turned then down, so it's just laying around. If I had to guess, I'd say there is a pretty good chance we'll eventually see that armor up and 50 BMG allowed.

For the 1,000 yard range, we lacked good ballistic info on the PMC Bronze 50A ammo, but tried 1 shot anyway. We did not get on paper with that shot, so he called it off until we can get good data to key in the ballistics with. I'm probably going back with the Hornady AMAX next time since there is a lot of info on those out there.

So today, I shot 0 rounds, owner shot 2. Got my application in and paid. Got my orientation and safety stuff done. Soon as they get me checked out, I'll be a member.

First off why in the world would anyone want to shoot a 50 BMG at 100 yards? That's just a total waste of powder bullet and time.

Anyone shooting a 50 really needs to know there ballistics drop honestly this is a dangerous caliber to be shooting at any distance and not putting that bullet into the berm.

I don't know your velocity but this should be close to what you were shooting.

Is this a serious question?

Would it be wise to throw 660+ grain bullets down a 1,000 yard range blindly without first checking to make sure your zero'd at 100? Would that be smart and responsible?

Even the range owner wanted to make sure where we were at 100 before going to 1,000 because I was using new ammo that I was not dialed in for.

In this case at this range, we only have a choice of 100 and 300 to check our zero before moving to 1,000.

Without a good zero at closer range, how would we be able to plug in our ballistics data and even get close to the paper at 1,000?

The owner is a competition shooter and been shooting 1,000 yards for a long time. He was not taking blind unsafe shots at 1,000.

He plugged in all the data in a ballistics calculator, dialed in 80 clicks, but did not hit paper.

We thought there might be something off with the published ballistics data from the ammo manufacturer

The only other possibly would be that my scope wasn't producing accurate .10 mil clicks.

That said, I'm also going back to a different range to test the tracking of my scope before I blame the ammo manufacturers ballistics info.

Just a comment on PMC ammo. I've never shot a .50BMG, don't know anything about them in terms of BC and what's good or not. Just a comment on PMC.

I have a .308 that is pretty accurate out to 1,000 with good ammo (BHA, SWA, handloads etc). I shot it once at 800 yards with PMC ammo and it was like beating your head against a wall making corrections. At least in my case, the bullet and BC was not suited to shoot 800 yards with any reasonable accuracy.

Just a thought. If you are spending that kind of coin on a gun and round, might as well do it right and be accurate.

Thanks for the info.

I tried to find AMAX, but the only place that had 50 BMG was outpost armory and they had 1 box of Federal and a bunch of PMC. I ended up getting 1 box of Fed and 3 boxes of PMC for like $217.xx I think it was.

I bet AMAX would have been dead on.

Got me thinking so I looked up some available .50 BMG rounds. Look at the 1st comment regarding surplus, Hornday and Barrett.

Not sure what you were grouping at 100 yards with PMC but unless you were around 1 MOA or less, would be a tough time hitting that 12 x 12" steel target at 1,000.

Yeah, you know... I'm just not tactical enough to support a .50BMG habit.  I'm not going to be shooting hadjis at 1,000yds anytime soon and I figure if someone wants me to start, Uncle Sam can foot the bill for it.  That's just a crazy amount of money for 10 rounds of ammo.  :)

You can shoot hadjis at 1000 yards with a .308. You just don't get the exploding effect :)

$50 for a box of ten rounds?  Holy f'ing sheet.... shooting .50 BMG is the sport of kings apparently.  No thanks!   :stare:

I've spent around $1,417 on 50 BMG ammo so far. I think it's more but can't find all my receipts.
