Qualified for my HCP today

Today I participated in the range portion of a NRA basic handgun/TN carry permit class run by our very own Phantom6. I plan to do a full write up of the class for the reviews section tomorrow when I'm not so tired.

So to make a long story short I shot 460/480 and qualified, not bad considering it was my first time shooting a handgun in my life. So now comes the hard part, submitting my application and waiting for that piece of mail.

BTW I love my XD.

I took it at Austin's Tennessee Firearms School in Oak Ridge, and is run by Phantom6 here on the boards (I'm sure you can PM him with any specific questions, I did). The class is a combination of the NRA Basic Pistol Course and the TN Carry Permit Course and as such runs a little longer than the state requires, which I was ok with. I believe the website says 10 hours, ours was closer to 11 but it was all very worth while. The class cost was $110, and after seeing the results I got I would have gladly paid more. For more information check out the website http://www.firearmsclasses.com/ or PM Phantom6 aka Mike. Hope this info helps some.

Free carry permit course in Church Hill??????? Wow! More details, please.

Congratulations Branket. You can start working on method of carry and a good holster while you wait. What gun are you going to pack?

when you get it, use it! exercise your rights. i've got a couple friends from college (married couple) who have theirs and NEVER carry! make sure you understand your new responsibilities BEFORE you ever carry. i'm sure you'll find plenty of advice here if you have any questions we're all here to help. congrats

The class is mandated at 8 hours minimum for the HCP class. The extra was for the NRA Pistol class I am sure. I also believe it is probably worth the cash for that part of the class.

Remember, the state HAS TO ISSUE the permit by the 45th day as long as you pass the background checks. That DOES NOT mean that you can carry WITH OUT the permit on the 46th day. You still have to have that little card in your wallet.

Congrats on taking the class. I ended up driving to Jackson, TN to avoid the long lines in Memphis to fill out the paperwork.

The only one I own. XD9 service. :D

XD-9s are good handguns. Very reliable and to me aim is very natural with them.

You do need to be careful in holstering them, but it will make a good carry weapon.

Your method of carry will depend on how you normally dress. Shirts in your waistband require a different technique than shirts hanging loose. I think most of us suggest concealed carry when possible, but remember that in Tennessee you have every right to open carry with your permit, so if the shirt comes up occasionally and shows the gun, that's OK. Just remember what you learned in the class about where you can not legally carry. This board is a good source of information too.

Carry feels funny for beginning packers, but feels more normal after a while. Make putting on the gun part of your routine every time you leave the house, just like putting on your shoes. The gun can't help even the odds if it is back at the house when you need it in the Wal-mart parking lot.

Just curious where you got that number from. From the Dept of Safety's website they list this:

* Upon a name search approval from TBI, the permit can be issued within ninety (90) days from date of application.

http://state.tn.us/safety/handgun/generalinfo.htm

90 days is the correct information. We find that in our neck of the woods at least, the state is returning the permits in 45 days or less. Had a father and son that took the class at the same time. Son got his back in 35 days while dad had to wait an extra 10 days and dad drove them both to the DOS office and to get their finger prints done as well. Why? Hey, we're dealing with govt. bureaucracy here :D

Congrats on the shooting there Branket. :meh: You scored well on the written tests as well. You are a good, safe, accurate shooter. Way to go "Deadeye"!
