Well my sons cat had to be put down yesterday after they discovered a mass in his stomach. We were pretty bummed cause he was a cool cat, but we had room for another animal in our house so we went on the hunt for a new friend last night. We ended up driving to Fort Payne AL and rescuing a 12wk red/rust male Doberman from some people that obviously didn't have the means to continue to raise him properly and who I pray don't continue to breed the ones they have. He's a little underfed and bug bitten but appears mostly healthy. Has a good temperament around the boys and seems to gravitate toward the toddler and has claimed him as "his person". I think we have guaranteed him a much better life and made a sound security investment for our family. He's tiny now but judging by his legs and paws he'll be a good sized boy :-)

Awesome! Rescuing is the way to go, I have a pit that I rescued a couple years back and she is a great dog. I really lucked out though, she was house broken and listened very well and the shelter had no idea she had been trained.
I like dobermans too, yours looks good and will be a great guard for the kids.

My other dog is also a rescue. Australian shepherd / terrier mix. Great noisemaker but otherwise useless as a gaurd dog. Great with the kids though.

Anyone have recommendations for helping him put on weight in a healthy manner. He's roughly 17 pounds at 12 weeks, and I'm thinking he should be more in the 30-35 pound range at this age. Anyone with Doberman experience that can verify that for me?

I would suggest a quality grain-free dog food. After he's taken to the vet for a check-up, of course. We prefer fish based dog foods. I'm sure he'll be just fine.

Ditto on the grain free. A lot of dog foods contain grain but dog's bodies can't process it. Companies use grain as a cheap filler and fillers have no nutritional value. Grain free contains more protein. It's just me but I only buy US made food. Also, it's best to find a brand you like and stick with it rather than switching all the time.

Actually there is research showing that changing periodically reduces the development of allergies and is healthier for the dog.
A good grain free kibble is the best way to go( check out 4health at tsc). Also lean unspiced meats (raw is better than cooked) and cooked veggies are great for the pup.

Great thing to do.

Great for all involved.

Our little furry owner came from the Humane Society's rescue efforts, and it's been a blessing.

Interesting info on the switching of foods.

Funny pics...the dog sitting on top of the other one seems to be saying "excuse me but this is MY seat".
