need advice on removing paint from a stainless gun

ok i've been wanting a mossberg 590 for awhile to replace my Maverick 88 as my bedside gun and i finally found a good deal on a used one .... well the reason it was so cheap apparently was because some genius had decided to paint his SS 590 with a layer of primer grey and then black .. the pump is sticky and now black paint comes off on my hands after spraying BreakFree CLP on the gun ... how can i safely remove the paint without damaging the gun? i used just a little bit of non-acetone fingernail polish remover on one spot and it went through the black and the primer right down to the stainless steel but not sure if thats the best solution? any advice from anyone who's had to do this would be greatly appreciated

The only parts the solvent might harm is the stocks and maybe the trigger guard if it is plastic. The rest can be soaked in solvent. Non chlorinated carb cleaner would also work really well for removing the paint from metal parts.

 

Are you sure it is a stainless gun? Reason I ask I would be worried someone decided to sand the finish before painting it. I have seen it before.

If it’s stainless, use acetone or any other chemical that will remove the paint; you can’t hurt it. Keep the chemicals off any plastic or wood. If you know someone that has access to a glass bead blaster; use that, it would only take minutes.

im about 90% sure the gun itself was stainless to begin with .. i say that only because the push pins and the trigger and the pump release and the bolt itself are all silver in color and when i google image search mossberg 590 all the blued ones seem to have black triggers push pins pump releases and bolts ... am i possibly wrong in this assumption? .. i plan on completely tearing the gun down so getting the chemical remover on the stock and pump should be a non issue

If you have access to a soda blaster and a compressor that can keep a steady 90psi it will take, no time to speak of, no damage to the gun or the environment.  I have a crappy compressor and the $25 soda blaster from Harbor Freight and a big bag of soda.  It comes in handy from time to time.  With my compressor I can go in spurts and it works fine for handguns, receivers and barrels, but takes a longer and wastes more soda.  I like the soda blaster better than solvents.
