What Am I Missing?

A nice cool beautiful afternoon so I decide to take a couple mile walk today. Got out to country road and noticed something in the middle of the road about three hundred yards in front of me.

Continue walking toward what ever it is and at about two hundred yards it drops down to four legs and walks off the side of the road and into the soy bean field. Looks like a domestic cat I think to myself.

The soy beans are about one foot tall and as I'm walking, I see this “cats” head keep popping up over the soy beans. The only way that could happen is if the cat was constantly raising up on two legs? I don't think so.

Anyway, I'm closing distance on the critter and each time it pops up its head I freeze in my tracks, then the head momentary pops back down. I do this the last fifty yards until I'm 5 yards and face-to-face with a big groundhog, just standing upright and looking at me. After a moment it goes back to what it was doing, eating, destroying and uprooting the soy beans right next to me.

I waved my arms and yelled at it to scare it off, nope, continued messing up the soy beans not five yards from me and paying me never no mind.

My neighbors recently told me about the damage the ground hogs and deer are doing to their lawn, crops and stuff and the 70 year old neighbor lady even borrowed her grandson's BB gun to shoot the ground hog, go figure?

As I'm standing there I'm thinking I could easily shoot it and do my neighbors a service but... I decided not to because I have tinnitus 30% of the time and a gunshot would immediately make my ears ring for hours without hearing protection, not to mention it's illegal since it's not my crops or property but...

It made me think that carrying a small set of Styrofoam ear plugs with my EDC gear might make sense, as I was thinking back the last five years.

In the last five years I've ran into a rabid skunk and raccoon during broad daylight on my property. I assume they were rabid as they were acting weird, disorientated, sick and salivating with tongues hanging out? Both times I did not have a firearm with or on me as I was preoccupied with my chores. I ended up dispatching one with a big stick and the other with a big rock.

Had I had my firearm with me it was a “no brainer” to just shoot them, but with no hearing protection, it still would have been sticks and stones.
