Roof Cleaning

Recommended Posts

Two sections of my roof need cleaning. I've been reading about some companies that use a chemical solution to remove the funk, eliminating the risk of damaging the shingles with a pressure washer. From what I understand, this process is also approved by the shingle manufacturers and insurance companies.

Anyone tried one of these companies?

My wife had this done a few years ago... maybe 4ish years? I was deployed at the time so I have no idea the name of the company. Anyway, it worked well but the funk is back. I'm probably going to have it done again here soon.

Roof pitch is way too steep for my liking, but a mixture of simple green and water and a soft brush on pole is what I used

I've noticed that most companies guarantee the streaks won't come back for 2 or 3 years.

I thought about that, but most of the do-it-yourself methods I've found can void the warranty and/or any possible insurance claims. No brushes or pressure washers allowed. I guess they can tell, because those methods often remove the granuals from the shingles.

I noticed these streaks before we purchased the home, but didn't give it much thought until a friend called me about a letter he received from his insurance company. It appears at least some companies are denying roof claims for simply having a dirty roof. From what I gather, streaks are a fungus that prevents the shingles from "breathing", causing premature deterioration. I haven't received such a letter, but I figured look into it.

I have a much lighter colored roof so having them cleaned is a must. Of course, the pitch is such that I hate getting up there and tempting fate, so I like the idea of leaving it to professionals. Years of nearly killing myself putting up and taking down Christmas lights have traumatized me to the idea of going up there.
