You have to many options to rationally choose from. Narrow it down a bit more according to what each gun features and which needs you need meet. You should only have 2 maybe 3 to choose between....

....and when your decision comes down to 2, buy them both!! :)

the taurus .45

with the taurus .40 in second.

personally id choose different weapons as i dont really care for the guns you listed but caliber and reliability is most important to me when gun shopping

Thanks. Now that I look at the list, my top three choices would be the Ruger, and the two Taurus guns. Caliber is not that important, but I am a fan of the full size as oposed to the compact. I did own a Taurus pt145 back at Ft.Campbell. It packed a heck of a punch, and always performed stellar, but wasnt accurate at all, and kicked like a mule on crack due to lack of weight. So, I guess, it would be between the pt 24/7 and the Ruger

Go for the taurus oss in 40 or 45..I just got the OSS in .40 and like it better than my glock

I will break my situation down a bit more:

I had all the guns I needed until my wife asked me to sell them when our son was going thru the "get into everything" stage. So i did (dont laugh:)

About a week ago, we had two succesive attempted burglars. ( and we are way out in the country ). Now she wants me to get a gun :):D

So, I am looking for #1 home defense, #2 I like shooting alot (so ammo costs), and #3 something thats not like toting a chainsaw if I take it somewhere.

I am a firm believer that a gun companies customer service is important, but I'd rather have a good weapon that wont need customer service/warranty. A gun in the shop, or waiting on a new pin is worthless for home defense. Now, i hear that taurus has great customer service, and they need it. From what I read, its a 50/50 split on the good and bad. And most of them complain of Pin failures.

Should I just spend the extra and go for an XD, Glock, or other?

P.S I had a ruger p94 that I loved, but it played into that "Toting a chainsaw sized weapon" category.

For home defense, I would reccomend a Remington 870 HD 12 gauge, they are very good at keeping pests out and the sound of the action of a pump shotgun can make those things that go bump in the night go away :)

Yeah, I know thats right. ( but I have convinced her we need a pistol :)

Could your wife be at home and need to use the gun to protect herself? Do you both train constantly?

If she could need it and you both don’t train constantly; forget the semi-auto’s.

If you are concerned about customer support Smith & Wesson is the undisputed king of the industry. Maybe a good .357mag revolver? If you insist on a semi check out the M&P.

If you are dead set on a pistol, that is the route I would go. I personally prefer the M&P, but any of them should be just fine.

Totally agree that if she wants to be able to use same handgun, but doesn't want to spend much range time getting hip to it, revolver is the way to go.

If you go that route, you can't beat Ruger SP101 for size/reliability/value unless you want one that's lighter and a little smaller in which case you probably want a pricier S&W (although Taurus and Charter Arms offer less expensive similar capability but with some debate as to durability compared to Ruger/S&W).

Unless you are set againsts revolvers I would consider one, especially if the little wife is going to be using it. Simple and don't have to worry about FTF or FTE or clearing action. Simi-autos just need more practice to be proficient with and seems to have more that could go wrong. Just my $0.02.--MP

Thanks. She is VERY RARELY home alone, and would need to use it. She wants me to get something she will shoot, but im not getting a pea shooter. I have considered a small revolver, as I would be worried about her remembering to chamber a round, safety, and all that. I have never considered S&W though. Maybe I will look. I am just not a fan of a revolver, i think its just a look thing for me. I know with a revolver, you hvae more reliability, but the look just doesnt do it for me. But, for home defense, I guess look doesnt matter. Im thinking of an 18in remington 12g, and convincing her we still need that pistol.

Actually, you need both. Just tell her that you need the shotgun for inside close quarters

and a pistol for the easibality of outdoors investigations. :) You can have both for the same/less amount of money that some manufactures want for just one of theirs.

Thats 2 for m&p's :)

I have never even seen one. I'm gonna go google one. How much are we talking about draining the already low bank account :D

If revolver, maybe go with a hammer-less for the wife's consideration, perhaps even a laser grip which can be a deterant itself. What are her likes and dislikes, experience or inexperience in/with handguns? Combine her considerations with your own for home defense.

Her handgun training is to the extent of me just showing her a pic on google. Seriously. So, I will have to take her from the ground up. So, compact = more kick, and her dislike. Im thinking heavier is better. Like the ruger maybe. ????

"But this is our lives hanging in the balance honey".....I can already hear this gun buying pitch forming.....only because I've been there myself. :)

Since this will be a home protection gun and the wife wants to shoot it; stay away from the small J frames and alloy frame guns. They make good carry guns but they are no fun to shoot. Let her shoot a 586/686 or a Model 19/66 (One of the larger K or L frames) using .38’s first.

It’s really not a joke. I have seen people that will buy junk because of a couple of hundred dollars difference. If you don’t have it that is one thing, but to skimp on something that could cost you (or her) your life over that amount of money is silly… don’t you think?

You can pick up full size S&W revolvers that are in great shape for $350-$400.
