New laws authorize schools to offer NRA's Eddie Eagle gunsafe program, requires school personnel to participate in an “active shooter and intruder” drill led by law enforcement officers and transfers the responsibility for issuing identification cards for concealed gun permits from driver’s license clerks to local sheriffs due to infringement on privacy rights by the DMV.

Interestingly, these laws were submitted prior to the Sandyhook shooting, not in response to it.

I like the Sherriffs Department issuing permits better than the DMV, when I lived in Alabama to get a permit was as easy as paying $15 and the Sherriffs Dept running a background check. If they had questions the Sherriff would interview you.

I don't carry anymore due to Tennessee, redicules carry permit law.

Drawback in 'Bama is that is not shall-issue. A sheriff can simply refuse to issue a permit if he doesn't like you, and there are periodic reports of that happening.

The odds of course are quite long against it, but I hope your last thought on earth is not how redicules it was for not carrying one. Or perhaps worse, the ridiculousness of not having been able to prevent the death or maiming of a loved one, and living with that.

That logic to me is much like paying more at Kroger or Bi-Lo because you disagree with their issuing a shopping card.
