Check out my newest Acquisition

Recommended Posts

A good friend of mine has fell onto hard times, and offered for me to buy his wife's grandfather's Marrlin 30-30. I have been wanting a lever gun for a while now. I have good memories of my first trips into the woods, carrying my Dad's and my Paw-Paw's Win. 30-30s, so I have been wanting to add one to the collection.

After it was all said and done, I acquired this rifle for $150. Th only thing I can see wrong is....it is missing the black plastic cap that goes on the bottom of the pistol grip. The scratches on the wood are from years of hunting trips, and boy am I anxious to oil it up (it is very dry and hasn't been shot since about 1994) and take it out to shoot it. Hell it might see more field time this season then my .30-06, since I am planning on hunting thick woods.

The scope on top is a cheap Tasco 3x9x40 and he gave me the strap and the cloth/leather carrying case that was bought when the gun was bought. I am planning on calling Marlin soon to find out the age.

Nice find. Will you be a good friend and sell it back to him for the same $150 after he gets back on his feet? At least give him first dibs on it should you ever decide to part with it yourself. Family heirlooms shouldn't be sold except as a last resort. :D

Absolutely. If by chance he wants it back, he can have it back at the same price.

I doubt he will though. These friends have no sentimental bone in them. They are the ones who gave me the Ruger Standard .22 pistol for helping them move....and it belonged to the same Grandpaw.

The only reason he didn't sell the gun to me then, was he thought he might want to go deer hunting with me one day, plus he didn't need the money at that time.

His Dad will buy a gun today and try to sell it next week for gas money, and I think that is where this buddy of mine gets it from. They just think they are gun people.

But absolutely, later on, if he wants it back, it will be the same price.

There are several websites that will reference the s/n for age. If it is under 50 years old you can send it back to Marlin and they will do a WONDERFUL job restoring it to 100% like new condition for a very, very reasonable price (They did my 48 year 39A for under $200 including the reblue!)

Nice gun! That pistol-grip cap will set you back all of $5 and the wood can look perfect again using Minwax Antique Oil finish.

Why can't I stumble into more deals like this!?!?

You might be able to find when it was made at this web site.

I have a Winchester and a Marlin, both in 30-30. The Marlin is much smoother handling.

Do you handload? The 30/30 is an easy one to load for and loads can be light or heavy with bullets being used also going light or heavy.

Have fun with your new(to you) rifle.
