Captain's Chicken was always a good one... jambalaya was decent at times.

Seems most of the safer bets were in the vegetarian MRE's... aside from the omelet ones.

Most of the bartering came into play with the side's and desserts/candies. The jalapeno cheese spread was the bomb.

However... my favorite? Probably whichever one I could stomach the best, that would allow me to take a **** sometime within the next month.

I've got about 2 cases of them from ebay before they were banned from being sold on there. I'm used to the old k rations so these are like a gormet meal. Way too much for me to eat in 1 sitting.

Why does EBay ban them?

Because they are actually govt. property and not to be sold. I guess I'm stuck with eating them since they can't be sold.

Never had an MRE. Although I'm sure the galley's food on my ship wasn't much better.

Not to steer the topic too far off course, but you can purchase civilian MRE's (identical -- probably from the same company that sells them to the U.S. Gov) on eBay. There are 300+ hits on eBay right now, as I type this. Looked in their TOS and didn't see anything about prohibiting them... just made mention of ensuring the food products were within expiration dates.

Never had the luxury of trying any of them. I wouldn't mind trying a few.

The modern MRE's are actually really good and taste good... and provide quite a bit of food. Definitely a ton of difference between what's afforded to the troops nowadays vs what they had in the past.

They just sometimes plug you up, which necessarily isn't a bad thing if you're out in the field.

Better than K, C, LURP's or the old freeze dried stuff. I almost had a sexual experience when I found out they came with a little bottle of hot sauce. :D

:D

I don't care to eat them unless I had to... kudos to our boys (& gals) living on them while we indulge in burgers and hot-wings.

I don't mind the packs of crackers & cheese spread too much, if I had my pick.

They stopped making the one MRE that I loved: Meatballs & rice w/spicy tom (thats what the box said) sauce. Not sure who "tom" is, but he dun good. That was back in the early 90's. Now I try to stick to the chicken breast or the spaghetti. Kinda hard to screw up a piece of chicken. They did score big with the jalapeno cheese spread!! :D

I always like the pork patties in C-rats. I hear that some cat food is pretty good too.

I recently sold an old LRRP ration. I'd rather sell it than eat it - especially after about 40 years.

Went through freeze dried stuff when backpacking. That's still a good way to go when you need to keep the weight down. MREs are not good at keeping pack weight low. But they are convenient and have improved over the years. Plus you can make some dandy bottle bombs out of the heaters. :D

They wouldn't allow us to keep/use the heater's in our MRE's during basic. Or the matches, for that matter.

But we definitely made up for that, during our trips down range. :D

I remember those, they were one of the best back then.

They all were better with that little bottle of tabasco!

Here is a site I found some on, I haven't ordered from them. http://www.thereadystore.com/mres.php?load=new&sid=ppgo00304&gclid=COLEwba6iJUCFQYdswodqG1sqw

My favorite part was the Govt. Penut butter pack and this rectangular oatmeal thing, looked like a cardboard brick almost. They were great together.

I haven't had one of the "old school" MRE's, but back in 1994 I believe it was, when we had that ice storm in Tennessee we were without power for 2 weeks. Needless to say we had to make do, my granddad had some MRE's and I really liked eating them. I liked the omlet and ham meals, the cheese spread and peanut butter weren't bad either, and those cookie deserts were tasty too! We poped popcorn with the old fashion mesh wire popper over a fire in the wood fireplace. We had to go to the lake in the back yard, use an axe to bust through 6"-8" of ice and get water to be able to flush the toliet. Needless to say for a modern teenager, it was an eye-opening experience.

That was 93. I remember it well, I was asked what I wanted for my birthday and I made the mistake of saying "I want it to snow A@@hole deep to a giraffe". Well looks like I got my wish that year, I'm real careful about what I wish for now.

I knew it was along there, I guess I'm getting old, btw I was a freshman in highschool that year. I also remember that my uncle drew a duckblind in the Camden Bottoms, didn't always need a dog, we skated across 6"+ ice and picked up our ducks!!

The first morning it happened I had to help my granddad cut the trees out of the driveway. We were cutting a limb when we heard a crack, looked up and a pine top broke off and was on it's way down. My granddad at the time was in his mid 50's, and before I could react, he was already sprinting past me (with the chainsaw), I tell you I have never seen an old man move that fast in my life!! Good times....ah..good times!!

Just the little warmer baggie.
