Tn. Vehicle emissions testing

Recommended Posts

its coming all over tn in the next 2 years

I've heard this as well. The biggest problem I see is that some people will suffer if this happens.

I'm not talking about the guy that hacks the exhaust system to sound cool. I'm talking about the single

parent or person trying to make the best with what they have.

If you ever work at a public parts store or repair shop, you'll understand what I;m saying.

I am split on the issue myself.

Your vehicle must pass emissions standards if you live in a county that contains a metropolitan city or any county that shares a border with said county. At least this is how it started out. Again it is an attack on people that can least afford it. It doesn't really affect folks driving new vehicles (other than it being a pain in the arse and $10) but rather the folks driving the vehicles after the first man puts 100,000 miles on it at which time you play the "how much is it going to cost to get the damn check engine light off long enough to pass the test" I've known of folks that were faced with making a decision between necessities and getting their car to pass emissions which can sometimes cost $500-$1000 or even more when they don't know how to fix it them selves.. Just another unintended consequence of governmen/tEPA games. Just shows you who they are least worried about.

Texas has this cash cow program, too, along with an annual vehicle safety inspection.  At the time I lived there, it soaked everyone for about $35, unless you had a relatively new car.  You could practically depend upon getting hit for headlight alignments, gas cap seals or worn wiper blades and tires.  You had to get them fixed before the coveted sticker went onto your windshield.  I hate to see this coming here.

That can't be right. Would be a lot more counties than just the seven involved if bordering ones had to do it also. 7 counties abut with Hamilton County alone, for example.

Also, Knox County/Knoxville doesn't require it so not sure about the "metropolitan city" moniker.

I would hate to see this.  I've lived in counties that required it and hated it.  I now pay $24 a year to register a vehicle, no county wheel tax, no emissions testing.  If it were made mandatory what are people supposed to do that own vehicles that will not pass?  My old pickup just ain't gonna pass.  When I rebuilt the engine years ago I took all of the emissions control stuff off because I lived in a county were it was not required.  I might put 1,000 miles on that truck a year.  I think we need to speak up on this one and let our representatives know that we do not want emissions testing?  Seriously, how much pollution is the small percentage of vehicles that couldn't pass producing?

I lived in Socal for 2 years were emissions testing is a nightmare. I would not have wanted to deal with that stuff. Thankfully I was registred in TN. If this comes to all of TN then I know lots of people who will be screwed. I doubt my lil dodge will pass and I kniw a lot of theze good ol boys who drive older model stuff for work will never pass. Its just a money thing.

Tapatalk ate my spelling.

If I understand local events correctly, right now there is no emission testing in Shelby County. Prior to the end of June it was only required by Memphis City residents and was funded by the city. They chose to end funding (cause we are broke) and turn it over to the county. Shelby county said "we don't want to pay for it either" and refused to take it over. Now it is up to the state and that looks like it will take at least 1-2 years to implement. Charlie Foxtrot as always.

That's just what i have been told by a couple folks at the Rutherford county Register Of Deeds. I've also heard and read the same thing numerous times over the years. Now as mentioned by Chucktshoes above, there may be counties that have refused to fund or implement causing this to not be 100% accurate or it may just be that Metropolitan Nashville and bordering counties are required or i guess there's always the chance that every one and place that i have heard or read this could be wrong.

Is Knoxville a metropolis? I sure didn't realize that.

I'm in Wilson co, and standard wheel tax/tags cost $49 I believe. But you still pay $10 to run every vehicle thru emissions. They even test diesel now...specialty tags to support the smokey mtns or trout unlimited cost about $85

In Rutherford it ends up costing $80 for standard tags with $10 emissions test. It may be just a little more than that but can't remember for sure.

This is correct. Basically City of memphis tried another power play, Well, if we have to do inspections, why can't county. so they tried to make the county do it and basically the county said F you. and that is where we stand right now. Although i believe the city had a policy in place if you had a car the was like 2 years or newer, you got a pass.

Oh, and for those in memphis, lets not forget about that "one time" wheel tax. I find it amazing what memphis is doing. They are not funding a school system anymore, they are not doing emissions any more, and guess what. Taxes are still going up....someone is getting paid off.

Well, without counting them up,  30 counties or more abut the counties that require the testing, but only 7 counties total require it. So for whatever reason, that's the fact.

Knoxville is the third largest city in the state. If you mean "metro government" where city/county is consolidated, by "metropolis". It's true we don't have that. But neither do some of the other counties that require the emissions.

So sure seems you've been given at least partially erroneous info from those officials. Probably the first time that's ever happened in this state. :)
