Heard a loud, very loud "bang" in my basement then all the power went out. Kept hearing noises in the basement. Decided I would check it out, was nothing and darn near the entire county power was knocked out. I drove to see and everything in Dayton was black, drove all the way up past Rhea County Hospital, all black, looked like the Hospital was on backup power, went the other way down to Sale Creek, power out all through Graysville and down to the middle of Sale Creek. Talked to a couple of guys sitting in a Shell, seems with all of this rain trees are falling down all over the place knocking down power lines. Was pretty eerie, kinda looked like Zombies might start walking through the middle of Dayton. But thats not what gave me a skeer.

When I went to check the basement I took my 870 and light with me. Guy across the yard has a pretty good size dog on a run and fenced in, that Dog has been barking his head off since about 7 PM. When the lights went off it became pitch black outside, couldnt see anything, dog still barking his head off, this is about an hour ago, around 1-1:30.

So I thought I would shine the light around to make sure there were no lurkers and when I swept the light across the narrow treeline that skirts the back part of the yard between the houses, I came across what appeared to be 2 green lights, facing directly at me. At first I thought animal but it didnt blink or move even a little so I figured I was shining on a lawnmower or something. But while I was thinking that, in a split second the two "green lights" disappeared. These lights were about 2 feet off the ground and at a pretty good width, so I figured it was a squat big headed dog or something.

Except I kept shining the light and looking, and the lights popped up again, but instead of 2 feet off the ground, now they were about four feet off the ground, had closed the distance by 50% and was closing....HOLY CRAP! Its alive and coming at me!

No way was I going to shoot at something I could not identify, would be my luck it would be some guys pet dog. At the same time no way was I waiting to find out if it was some guys pet dog either. So like a wuss, I headed into the house. Rapidly.

You could almost write a movie script off this.

Keep going, what happened next?!?!?!?!?!?

Ya didn't just go in and stay in did you?

White people always investigate in the horror movies, so did you?

Still alive?

Someone go check on him?

No actually that wasnt it. Here is the rest of the story.

After stepping in the house, I grabbed a can of Vienna Sausage, a Diet Mountain Dew and watched Family Guy for half an hour.

I know it's terrifying but I have to tell my story.

I am so lucky I live where I do. If the same thing happened to me I would have yelled to try to scare it off. If that didn't work I would fire a shot into the ground and if it is obvious it is stalking me it would get one between the two green dots but only after verifying it isn't something that isn't a threat. Something that big and closing is a threat.

Matter of fact we go through this process pretty regularly. I am grabbing a gun as I have my wife "count the cats". BTW, we only have two cats now but had four at one point.

I live in a pretty rural area and there is nothing good that would be on my property trying to stalk me. We have seen bear from time to time and one of our neighbors that lives a 1/4 mile away had rottweilers killed on their chain. I am sure there might be a cat or two, not mountain lion but bobcat, and a 30+ pound cat is going to leave a mark no matter who you are. We also have coyote CLOSE but have never seen one.

Actually though there is one little thing that concerned me a tiny little bit. In at least a decade I have not heard of a bear sighting around here anywhere. My MIL and BIL live five minutes from here. They live directly across from a horse farm and their house skirts Richland Creek. (Same creek posted in those pictures I posted at Pocket Wilderness, on the Cumberland Trail). Like I said have not heard of a Bear sighting. He takes tons of pictures right across from his house in the morning because there are a LOT of deer that come out into the pastures early (I have seen them all day long on some days). He has pictures he has taken of Deer, Coyotes, Fox, and of course rabbits, plus racoons and some other normal critters in his back yard, which backs right up to the creek and up a big hill. About 45 days ago I came in and he says he saw a bear cub come out of the woods that morning. I told him thats doubtful, havent ever heard of a bear here. Says not only did he see it that morning, it had come out of the treeline next to the creek several times and he was sure it was a bear. Again, I told him no way and convinced him he didnt see a bear, probably just a big racoon. Until about a week later and I am standing on the porch and watching deer and out of the woods walks this big furball. Im thinking "Thats a fricken bear!". It was a small one, but still a bear. Went in and got the BIl he says "I told you, I have seen it more than once". Didnt put another thought into it, just told him, sitting out here at night just keep an eye out and if you see a larger one go inside. Then about 4 weeks ago I was looking at a house towards Spring City and was talking to this retired Colonel in his house, he had religous items all over the house and he and his wife were very nice. He was showing me where the deer came below his house and bedded. I asked him if he had seen any bears around here and he said all this time not a single one, until just recently, there were three right out in the road at the intersection but they ran them off.

Again didnt give it a second thought.

Well last week I had some garbage and put the bag in the can and latched down the lid. Had to go out of town for the day and came back the next morning. When I got back the trashcan lid was off, the bag was ripped open and trash (Including the bag) was strewn over half an acre. Spent half an hour cleaning it up. Put the trash (Including food, wife is still working in MS until end of July so Im eating out of the microwave) back in another bag, back in the can, latched the lids back down and set my floor jack on top of the can. Its a smaller 10 ton, light but still enough to keep animals out. I thought. Had to drive to MS to take care of some business and came back the following night, got back around 11. Again, trash can knocked over, bag out, trash strewn over half an acre. Get up this morning, trash can knocked over, trash everywhere again, I have a small table and rocker I sti outside on the porch with, wife put a plant on the table, knocked over, small white trash can placed so it cant be seen, knocked over, trash from it (Not much) but strewn around, she has a tall thing like a tree about six foot tall in a heavy base, knocked over, this stuff isnt out where the wind can get it either.

Im not saying we have a small bear, not at all. Could be a racoon, would have to be a big one. As far as domestic animals go, in a month I have only seen two small Terriers, old dogs. Day one I was sitting out and both of them came and jumped right up in my lap. Too small. There is one housecat, tagged, thats here all the time, skinny. No way could have knocked over that can with the floor jack sitting on it. And one dog, the neighbors dog I mentioned, he's in a run and fenced in and has not been out.

But considering I walk out my back door, look right and about 3-5 minutes walk across a field you would be standing at the base of Dayton Mountain looking up at Waldens Ridge, and a 5 minute drive, or 15 minute walk your on the Cumberland Trail. I suppose it could be about anything. Im going up to Academy today and pick me up a game cam and mounting it on one of the beams that hold up the carport facing the mountain.

Edit: Dolomite posted while I was typing the above. After reading that, now it really wouldnt surprise me that it could be about anything, but whatever it is, is probably large. Just looking out, the only thing between me and that mountain is 2 houses, a treeline and an open field.

Don't feel too bad. Last year I almost blew a hole through my front door because I was convinced someone was getting ready to kick it in.

Turns out it was the wreath my girlfriend hung on the door. Through the peep hole it looked like someone's shoulder trying to stand off to the side.

my GF "It's the wreath you big idiot"

I see eyes all the time, most are cats. Some might be coyotes but ya never know.

No bears in Mt Juliet that I know of.

I suggest the OP get a better flashlight.

I have several LED flashlights powered by 18650 Li Ion rechargeable batteries. I use what I call the dog versus deer to determine what light I carry outside. Most of my lights throw enough beam to tell the difference between a dog and a deer over 300 feet away... most reach 400 feet and the big one reaches nearly 600 feet.

Over here in Birchwood we had a dog get attacked by a bear last year. His back end had slash marks that you could tell we're done by claws and too big to be a cat. You could tell where it had stripped the hide off. Also where we drop off our dog when we go out of town over off birchwood pike the owner said they had heard a bear had been caught and relocated on the refuge. Last year right after my neighbor told me about her dog, I got a call from the twra doing a survey on black bears.

Did the other two keep advancing?

Well, I was wrong about no Bear sightings. 4 months ago, a Cub up the Hill from United Grocery, about a mile from here. Made the papers. 1 month ago a cub in Veterans Park in Spring City, about 17 miles, also made the paper. Another sighting on the far east side of town. And a warning printed in the local paper about 7 weeks ago to be cautious as the bears are coming down from the mountains to find food.

LOL, I should have warned you about the gremlins when you were asking about this area.

You lucked out BIG TIME in a couple of ways...

There's no denying this because it's a proven TV / movie fact: 100% of the time women always, and I mean "always" fall down outside when running away from danger and the monster / bad guy! Especially when it's in an old black and white movie and it was dark outside so everything was in black and white, cepten your green eyes in your case.

The majority of times women are in high heels or other non running type shoes outside in the woods trying to escape the green eyed zombie monsters and fall down multiple times trying to flee, but always get caught. Sometimes it just pays not to be a female?

100% of the time when women run from the boogieman they always let out numerous high pitched loud screams. Never heard a man scream like a woman but it doesn't seem to work so I wouldn't recommend it?

Well considering how seriously you all took this situation, as mentioned, I figured I better go pick me up a game cam. So I went up to Academy and picked me up a game cam, (Something I had been wanting anyway), and the end result was faaaar different than expected. (Posted in show and tell in about a minute)
