I have a 2003 Toyota Tacoma . Very awesome except for the crappy "enviromentally friendly paint" they use ! I guess thats why they are made in California, haha! Anyways this is a rust spot that happened from chip on the side of the truck . Any suggestions on what I should do to prevent further rust ? Should I just take some small sandpaper and sand it then put touch-up paint over it ? I just want it to stop the rust , I am not worried about the way it may look afterwards, just want to stop the rust .  Just to note : I am a good mechanic , just not a body man . Here is a pic .

I'm not an expert, but I'd imagine you'll want to remove as much rust as possible, primer with metal conditioner, then paint.

I just wish that the whole truck was polymer , haha , like a Glock frame. Seriously I hate rust !

Aquaclean followed by RustSeal. Rust is like a cancer, if you dont get it all its going to come back. The only real effective way to get it all is to cut out the metal part that is rusted and replaced. But there is at least one method I know of that is effective, we looked it up and used it on an old CB350 tank a friend was restoring.

 

Use the Aquaclean. It cleans nearly all of the rust and reacts with the metal and gets nearly all of it. RustSeal reacts chemically with the rust to stop it and then seals off the spot where the rust is (or was).

 

It does work.

Aint ya got an ole buddy who is a paint and body man?   If ya dont, do a bit of a google search and see how to sand the spot out and fair the paint primer and clear coat back by hand sanding.  When ya look at the "how to" stuff you'll see what i mean.  That little spot will get about 3 or 4 times larger if ya do it right.  Sand it out, goin finer and finer until it's slick as a baby's rumpus; then sand some more.  Then find some spray primer and spot it back in.  It'll look bad; but the problem will be fixed and the bare metal sealed back against the weather.  

 

When paint is cut to the bare metal like yours is and rust starts; the only real good way to fix it is what ive described.  Ya really need to find an old buddy that does this sort of thing.  He can probably spot it back in to where ya hardly notice it.  Sorry for the bad news.  I've got some of the same problems on the hood of my 08 tacoma thanks to some sons of satan carving it with a key.  The fix.  Paint the hood.
