Took the HCP class (again)

I just finished the HCP class today. (yes again, as i let my first permit expire). I took it with "Safety South" which is ownd by a member here (I dont know if I can say his user name or not) The class was very good with alot of info that was not in the first one I took. Although it lasted 2 days (classroom sat and range sun) it was well worth the money! The instructor really new what he was doing and did not get on a high horse and think he was better than any of us just because he has been to "gun school". So anyone that has not taken the HCP class really ought to check these guys out. Now...the wait game

Officers in TN are supposed to have a HCP off-duty. I've heard varying reasons as to why, but some are so they can carry something other than their department issued gun, avoid liability for their department, etc. I don't have a 100% answer, but every cop I know (I know alot) has an HCP if they carry off-duty.

Thats interesting. I would have never thought a Cop would have to have a HCP to carry off duty. I figured the badge would trump that since there really never off duty in a sense. What could the hcp class teach them they haven't already learned at the academy or on the job.

I dont think you are required to take the class if you have adequate training from elsewhere

There were 2 cops in my class here in Chatt. And the instructor was SWAT and knew her. SHe didnt have to sit through the class but she did have to take the tests.

Not true.

Recommended? Yes, but they don't have to unless they work for a weird-ass Dept that forbids off-duty carry.

Also, POST certified officers are exempt from having to take a HCP if they decide that they want one.

From the TNDOS website...

Effective July 1, 2005, Tennessee handgun carry permit law will now allow certain applicants already exempt from complying with firing range provisions of the current statute to also be exempt from any classroom requirements. Those current exceptions are applicants who prove to the department that within five (5) years from the date of application for handgun permit, the applicant has:

Been certified by the police officer's standards and training commission, or successfully completed training at the law enforcement training academy; successfully completed the firearms training course required for armed security guards; or successfully completed all handgun training of not less than four (4) hours as required by any branch of the military.

Some may for the reasons that Todd mentioned, but in NO way do they have to or supposed to.

The badge under my avatar does mean law enforcement and I am employed by a local sheriffs department. (not in clarksville). At the department I work I am a supervisor in the detention center and we are sworn deputies but are not issued firearms due to not being on the road. So I do have to have an HCP. Hope that clairifies it a little.

mike 357, The reason the class, as you put it, was "drug" for 2 day was pretty simple. the info provided was WAY more than that was required by the state. We had a couple of people that had never shot a handgun before and I thought the way the classroom part was handled was alot more indepth for the beginner. It covered a little more than the basics. In no way did it make any of us an expert gun fighters but it did make all of us more confident in our abilities and our weapon. So I dont think "Drug out" is a fair description for the quality of instruction given. Of course this is just my opinion. BTW This class was less expensive than any of the one day classes I have seen, Web site has it listed at $75

I was in the same class. Top notch class by the way. The only part that was "drug out" was the video from DOS. I am a verified insomniac but I think I'm cured now. I preferred the two day class over a one day. Sitting at a desk for several hours and then out on the range for several more was more than I wanted to do in a days time.
