That's right, discount everyone else's opinion before they have one. Not going to bother.

That's the open mind thing that I was talking about.  My opinion is that some people won't even give this an honest look.

I don't discount everyone's opinions, just the closed-minded ones.

The problem most folks here have with the call for "open mindedness" on this issue is that to believe that the present gubmt is somehow following the law requires you to deny what your eyes, ears, and intellect is telling you.    It also requires you to have a child-like belief in the alturism of government and the uprightness of its bureaucratic corps and elected officials; not to mention the fact that you have to discount and ignore the mountain of data and reports of mis-deeds as somehow the musings of mad men.  I simply do not believe that anyone with a smattering of genuine concern for the Constitution and the Bill of Rights can believe that what is going on with the PRISM program is constitutional or lawful.

Good points, It just that in 16 yrs in the military I have learned that what we see in the news and what is really happening are usually different things and the media will tell a story in the most sensational and emotional way possible whether its totally true or not. I just like to have as much info from all sides before deciding for myself what I think really happened.

Another thing that my time has taught me is that the government is made up of people and as a group people are not to be trusted.

Stay vigilant my tinfoil friends. Seriously, the people are what keeps the government honest or allows them to be evil.

Unfortunately, history has proven that you can't trust Governments.  That goes for our Government too.  It may be that the people in charge NOW are trustworthy, but who is to say that the ones following them will not mis-use about this tool, the intelligence community finds so invaluable? Better to do away with this program now and others like it, than to pass this on down to future generations to have to deal with.

I LOVE being called closed minded. I have convictions and beliefs that I hold dear and to be "open minded" in today's terms means that someone is telling me I'm wrong and I need to believe like they do. (Homosexuality is a good example)

I take being closed minded as a badge of honor. Edited by 101

I can see that, there are things that we should hold in a death grip but others that should be discussed with a mind open to learning new things. I am open to having a discussion on almost anything but that doesn't necessarily mean that I am going change my mind just because I let the other side speak their mind. It amuses me when people accuse my demographic of "clinging" to certain things like guns, the Constitution/Bill of Rights, Christianity, etc. The fact that I still hold strongly to the principles that our country was founded on is a badge of honor to me also.

To me the technology aspect of it all is irrelevant, it's all about how it's used and the people that we allow to control it. The tech will always be there and the fact that the government has the capability to spy on us should be assumed and is nothing new. But if it is used to violate our rights and freedoms then the people should make such a noise that the government can't ignore. Though, I still haven't seen or heard of a specific instance where PRISM was actually used to violate someone's rights only that the capability exists which is not news, at least to me.

That document seems to contradict this power point on the PRISM program: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/special/politics/prism-collection-documents/

Which one to believe, the 3 page document the government releases after getting caught with their hand in the cookie jar, or the power point made to explain to people in the Intelligence community how and what they can get from "the most used surveillance program" in the NSA?

I found this interesting and couldn't find it anywhere on here so here you go.

http://www.dni.gov/files/documents/Facts%20on%20the%20Collection%20of%20Intelligence%20Pursuant%20to%20Section%20702.pdf

I'm sure that the tinfoil folks will dismiss it because everyone in the government is evil but hopefully people will read this with an open mind.

Enjoy

We may never know the answer to your question. All we can do is examine all the evidence go from there.
