I am not a snake expert. Can someone identify this little guy?

Looks like a water snake. Dont know anything more specific but Ive seen the same kind around creeks and ponds alot.

I go with Brownsnake, or technically "Dekay's Brownsnake", appearance varies, but tail is quite distinctive:

Well, most every snake will get in the water from time to time, so just about any of them can be a "water snake" for a while. :)

 

When was a kid, I caught my big ass pine snake I kept as a pet for about a year swimming across the widest part of Watts Bar Lake. They freak people out cause they just "look" venomous, sort of sharing a combo copperhead/eastern diamondback appearance, and they get pert dang BIG, both in length and girth. My girl was about 7 feet long by the time I let her go. And they'll also coil up and make a loud rattle like HISS, too! She was shaded a bit more brownish than this pic:

Absolutely a Dekay's Brown Snake. Healthy looking snake, plump little guy or gal.

Yep brown snake. I find them all the time around my moms house. I had one when I was younger that layed eggs. Only 2 hatched and they look nothing like they do when grown.

Water Snakes are really hard to tell apart from a Cotton Mouth but those aren't indeginous to middle or east TN, just west.
