New boat registrarion

Well, went down to florida on vacation and came back home with a boat. Was excited until they told me that i have to pay taxes on the sales price when i register it. As i understand, i can register it anywhere in tn but tax varies from one county to next. Where is the cheapest and least painful place to register? Thanks all

When I registered mine, they based the tax amount on the selling price and in comparrison with the book value. I wasn't taxed based on my county like county auto taxes. Mine was "sales tax".

 

If you bought your boat at less (substantuley) than book value, be prepared to have the seller provide you with a letter stating why.

Sales tax is the same no matter where you register it.  You will not get around it.  If it is worth more than what you paid, as Dave said, the seller needs to give you a receipt and reason why.  You can't get a receipt saying you paid a dollar and only pay on that.  They will get their money one way or the other.   Depending on how expensive it was, the rate may go down to around 6 %.

 

Plus you need to register it where you live.  I have been through the exact same thing and also live in Franklin.   It's like a car, it's illegal to register a car in a county where you don't live to avoid wheel tax, etc.  Long story short, pay the tax and hit the lake.

It is a new boat so i have a bill of sale i will have to provide. How i understand it, there is a 7% state tax and a 2-2.7% county tax. I can look up the tax rates but would love to find a county that is "easy to deal with" wink nod

I don't think you can just register it anywhere.  You have to register it to an address where you live.  It typically connects to your twra number.  It seems to me they will require you to register it to the same as your license.  I don't think there is a county tax or at least I don't remember it, but that may have changed.  I bought my boat in 2008, so it's possible.

Just verified you can register anywhere in tn. Will register in butler county who has a 1.5% county tax. The ave county tax is around 2.5 or so. Will save a few hundred bucks.

Did you pay FL sales tax on the purchase? If so, I not sure how all that works on an out of state purchase. I'm thinking you wouldn't get double taxed. Since the sale was out of state I'm not sure how TN can claim they require tax on sale from another state.

I've only purchased a used boat in state, so as others have said, they're going to get their sales tax.

Some states have reciprocity agreements regarding taxes on such things.  I bought a car from my uncle in MI several years ago.  I paid 4% MI sales tax instead of 8% TN sales tax.  He gave me a document that I gave to the county clerk stating I'd already paid the tax.  Either FL doesn't have one with TN or the seller didn't know that.

You will pay tax in Tennessee whether it be sales tax or use tax. If you register it in TN...they'll get ya! My boat was bought in tennessee and I paid sales tax when I registered it. I bought a car from a soldier on Fort Campbell who had bought the car and registered it in Kentucky, and when I registered it in TN, well, I had to pay sales tax, even though he had paid tax on it in Kentucky the same year. They'll get you coming and going!
