Why You Should Think Like A Green Beret Instead Of A Doomsday Prepper

Sobert Gummer

There is a disaster coming and you have a decision to make: Is it better to live like a rat in a hole (a bunker) or to network with your neighbors and organize your local area of operation? Sure, it’s a loaded question but it brings up an interesting point: That even the lone wolf can’t survive long by himself. We are social pack animals by nature and the stronger we make our local “pack” the better our chances of survival.

I’d rather have a local neighborhood of 400 organized, motivated individuals defending an area and watching each other’s back than to go it alone in a ten foot corrugated pipe buried in the middle of nowhere. And if we agree on this point, then it makes perfect sense to look at the Green Berets for inspiration.

yeah it gets tricky when dealing with non trained civilians who have their own reasons for doing things .. where as the green berets are highly trained and have been molded into a "for the greater good of the group" mindset, too many civilians would look out for number 1 and not risk their neck to have your back .. not saying it's not a good idea but i would have to know someone pretty well to trust them at my back if we were deep into a SHTF scenario

I disagree. If society were to break down most people would be scared shitless. They really wouldn't know what to do and would be looking for someone with confidence and skills to cling to. This can be seen by the confident person as a burden or blessing. The burden is obvious, but it may also be a blessing because you have someone who will do menial tasks in exchange for the security someone who has their shit together can provide.

Plus, as the article states, people are pack animals. We formed villages, neighborhoods, town, and cities because we don't like to be alone. Being alone not only sucks but it's bad for you if done for extended periods of time. The stress and lack of interaction take a toll on your mind. Having others with you means you don't have to do everything for yourself and you can actually enjoy yourself somewhat in your down time.

Of course it's probably a moot point anyway. Or least I sincerely hope so.

Green Berets take untrained civilians and turn them into a cohesive force. They idea isnt that just the twelve man team makes it but that together the group makes it.

Sounds good on paper. Not sure I have that much faith or trust in my fellow man.

I do a few. My "team" group whatever is hand picked for that reason.

Green berets go in and train and motivate civilians for unconventional warfare. Its not just a team of berets they are taught to train gurrieal force.

I tend to laugh at people who say they'd last very long during a teotwaki situation; but after seeing the awesomeness that you post pictures of from time to time, I can say I believe that what ever team has you in it will stand a fighting chance if shtf.

I don't know how long I'll survive the end of the world, but I do my best to be as self reliant as possible. My main goal is to live in a cabin on the mountain and LIVE for a living. Do a little forge work for side money, hunt, fish, raise live stock and a big garden for food and be in a postion to not even notice if the grid goes down or the stock market crashes

you'd have to see my neighbors to understand why I have so little faith in them

if I had time to assemble a group, it'd be different. they'd want me around and i'd want them around. we all have a similar mindset about survival and disparate talents we can all take advantage of.

I doubt time would allow for that, though

No time like the present time.  Assemble your group now.

I'm not sure Jerry Miculek and Les Stroud will be as eager to to so as me, LOL.

The groups have already been thought up & formed a long-time ago, they are called (from largest to smallest) nations, states, counties, cities, towns, villages, neighborhoods, friends & family.

Depending on the severity of the event/calamity, some of the above may be dissolved in the chaotic aftermath, but surely some of the current infrastructure will likely survive.

Unless we are talking about a true "black-swan" event, after which the world as we know it is altered completely, even if only temporarily.

i would love to agree with you, i just have difficulty in believing it would work that way here in the good old USA given the way things have gone in the last decade or 2, i would be afraid to put trust in your average joe (hey that's me!!) to not screw me and my family/friends/group over until i knew them for awhile... but maybe it would be that simple .. maybe TEOTWAWKI would weed out the idiots fast enough to be a non issue lol
