JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Two people are dead after what the Jacksonville Sheriff Office is calling a home invasion in the Fort Caroline area.

JSO says it all started around 11:20 p.m. Wednesday when they got a report of shots fired at a home in the 2000 block of Oak Water Drive.

Officers found that a group of suspects had tried to break into the home.

"They barged in guns pointed at us screaming get on the ground, where is your money, where is your money. And the next thing I know boom, boom, boom, boom," said "Big John" who lives in the home and did not want to be identified.

One of the people inside the home fired shots, hitting at least one of the intruders, 24-year-old Aaron Antwan Harris.

Harris was taken to UF Health Jacksonville, where he later died.

A tense minute or two is how "Percy" described what unfolded inside the home where six men were watching a movie.

"Then I heard bullets. I don't know who is firing and then it is silent to scared to look up, but I do. I see my friends looking up as well and I see a man face down," said Percy who was visiting friends.

Police are still looking for the other suspects in the case, which is related to a body found behind a dumpster at the Monument Road Animal Hospital.

According to Lauri-Ellen Smith with JSO, it was determined that the deceased person, who has not yet been identified pending family notification, was also a suspect in the home invasion.

There have Been a couple of home invaders shot here in the Chattanooga area in the past couple of years. It would be bad to shoot someone like that. It would stay with you the rest of your life I'm sure. But you have to protect your family and yourself. Being a criminal comes with inherent risks.

This kinda stuff happens more than you think The following statistics were taken from NCVS (National Victimization Data Survey) and UCS (Uniform Crime Reports).
The FBI Says:

Every 12 seconds a home is invaded
6,646 break-ins every day
Over 3.5 million burglaries per year
13% of homes are burglarized per year
19.2% of rental properties are burglarized per year
85% of all break-ins are through through the door
67% of all burglaries involved forcible entry
38% of all assaults occur during a home invasion
60% of all rapes occur during a home invasion
70% of burglaries involve residential properties
Burglaries happen between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.
Home Invasions happen between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m.

If these statistics were not staggering enough:

The FBI states that only 12.4% of burglars are ever caught, charged and convicted!

The FBI claims ‘Every 12 seconds a home invasion occurs by somebody going right through the front or back door’. This happens in 85% of all break-ins. Door frame failure is virtually always the cause. This type of burglary is too lucrative and holds very little risk for the criminal.
