Jak Attack- my new EDC

Recommended Posts

Finally finished my new EDC blade.  5 1/2 in blade; hand forged. Oak handles.  Super comfortable in my hand.

Very nice! What's the steel?

This one is kinda sentimental. Wife's grandfather passed last year and I got some of his old worn files.  I used one for this blade.  The oak handle is from flooring in their old house(which just got sold) that was removed for a/c install.

How is the handle attached, does it have a mechanical connection or just glue? I was also wondering about the EDCness (for lack of a better term) of this knife not because of shape but because of blade length, isn't it over the legal length for public carry?

Are you at all concerned that your hand could easily slide from the handle to the blade? Not knocking your work, but I'd sure as heck slice my hand open.

Not really. I carried the coldsteel finn bear before this one and it has a similar  handle design.  Knock on my wooden head, I hope I don't slip.

Very nice, but "every day carry"? Like, everywhere?

Yep. It is perfect for picnics, weddings, , church, campouts, playing hopscotch, you name it!

I originally wanted brass pins and glue.  Someone (me) forgot to drill holes and didn't want to go through all the troubles of annealing (again), hardening (again), and tempering (again).  Next time I will probably do pins too, but I actually really like that this one does not have pins and shows only the natural wood. It is def unique in that aspect.

As far as the EDC length, I guess it is just a bit long.  It just wouldn't have been the same blade at 4 inches...

I tend to prefer knife blades slightly over carry length, I've never been called on it. I will say that this last knife I did was so hard at the handle that I couldn't scratch it with a drill, and I just used a plumbers torch to heat the pin areas seperately. The handle doesn't have to hold an edge and sometimes its better just to leave it sorta soft. I wonder how the glue will hold up to use. What brand was it?

It was a different epoxy than I normally use and i can't rember the brand. I thought about doing the handle like you said but I don't have a torch. If the handle doesn't stay put I will have to rework it but I am hopeful.

Well, worse case, it's 11 months 29 days too long. ;)

Just so you're aware.

Officer: " do you know it is illegal to carry a knife over four inches long?"
UncleJak: " yes officer I know, but I cannot carry a knife shorter than my moustache"
