HR 2247 Would Allow Importation of Koreand C&R Eligible Rifles

Saw this on TTAG today; here's the article: http://www.thetruthaboutguns.com/2013/06/foghorn/bill-would-allow-importation-korean-m1-garand-carbine-rifles/#more-236181

Read it for the full details, but in a nutshell, WY rep. Cynthia Lewis has introduced a bill to bring M1 Garands and M1 Carbines home (with further implications): it looks like it would re-open the importation of C&R guns regardless of how State (which was Hilary!'s village, now Kerry's corral) feels about them.  I both wholly support it and doubt it has any chance of being enacted as law, but it can't hurt to make a phone call or six in support.  I want a carbine, as do many of you, and the CMP is out of them.  Were the bill to succeed, we'd all have a shot to get one.

Sure would be nice...

I'm missing something re: posting videos, so I'll tell you the above was the Beach Boys playing "Wouldn't It Be Nice" - Seemed appropriate.  Wish I could remember how to post easily-viewed videos as I'd done in the past. I'll save the details for the correct part of the forum.

EDIT: I caught the "KoreAND" in the titel after posting.  Sorry, TGOers.  Hopefully it's a happy accident that implies that other C&R eligible imports from countries other than S. Korea will be coming as well.

Would be nice! I would love to start collecting some military rifles (not even a Mosin Nagant yet but have been looking).
My grandfather has a M1 that I want really bad but I will never get it, so maybe some imports will help the market and I can find/afford one.

Key bill text:

"Notwithstanding any other provision of law, regulation, or
Executive order, any such firearms described in subparagraph B may be
imported into the United States..."

I would suggest that this language should remove the words regulation and Executuve Order as neither is subordinate to the law and therefore this language only serves to allow bad actors to continue to behave poorly.

4 cosponsors so far - start working the phone boys!

Rep. Stockman, Steve [R-TX-36] 06/14/2013
Rep. Franks, Trent [R-AZ-8] 06/14/2013
Rep. LaMalfa, Doug [R-CA-1] 06/14/2013
Rep. Hartzler, Vicky [R-MO-4] 06/14/2013

Guys I want these rifles back home also, but there is a problem......  :stir:

Some of those Garands & Carbines were part of a lend-lease deal with the ROK.  Those rifles are still under control of the US Military by serial number.

The Koreans are wanting to sell them all back to us via an importer when some of them should be coming back to us via the CMP.

So in affect this bill would allow the Koreans to select an importer who would then sell the rifles back at a higher cost to the America taxpayer who already owns some of those firearms.  Ask Walmart about dealing with Korean businessmen and their custom of kickbacks which to them is just part of the deal.

Now if the Garands are all -13 Winchesters and early IHCs then of course lets get them back here anyway we can!  :dirty:

This bill would also open the door for other currently prohibited guns such as Russian SVTs, SKS, captured G43s, Chinese SKSs etc.

That's the "big deal" part of the bill - it's not a tiny carve-out for Garands and Carbines in Korea.  ANY C&R eligible weapon would be importable regardless of the State Dept's wishes.  With the executive order language in place, this would be dependent on the administration in the WH at any given time, but it's an improvement over the status quo.  The entrenched 4th branch of .gov that is our federal bureaucracy is overwhelmingly anti-gun (among other things).
