Today the country has truly changed. The fossilized idiots in black ruled that proof of citizenship is not a legal requirement when registering to vote. How long will it be before ACLU sues the state of TN to overturn it's voter ID law?

While that's the de facto result, that's not really what the ruling was, which was simply that federal law preempts state law on the matter. Federal law could be changed to require proof of citizenship, and it's pretty certain they would uphold that if it came to them.

No that's not what the court said. The court said the states could not have ADDITIONAL citizenship requirements beyond what the federal government already requires. In the opinion Justice Scalia basically set the framework for how states have to go about getting stricter citizenship requirements while also saying that they way Arizona went about it was unconstitutional.

So basically the way the news reported it ; the SCOTUS ruled 7-2 that requiring proof of citizenship is unconstitutional, was incorrect? I did not research the or read the ruling of the court I was going by what was stated on 2 different programs. Both on non Fox stations. And with their rulings on voter ID cases why would it be any different?

I read the decision and now understand the ruling was upholding the Voter Registration Act that says the states must accept and use the federal form that does not require any proof of citizenship other than the person saying that they are a citizen. And that the state can not add to that without going to court and proving that the need of proof is required.

Next time I will research before spouting off. I still think it's bogus that no ID or proof of citizenship is required to vote in most of this country. May be why it struck a nerve with me. Lo siento. Perdoname por favor.

Yes and no, but technically more incorrect than not, I'd opine.

It's not lawful for a state to require it, because they ruled a state can't require anything more than the federal form called for in the National Voter Registration Act. They didn't rule that requiring it would be unconstitutional period,  like if the Act were amended to require that.

Funny how states are allowed to make all kinds of additional restrictive firearms laws beyond the federal ones, though, isn't it?

I think it's interestin that the supremes gave the state the "roadmap" of how to fix this by petitioning the commission that is responsible for this form (...cant think of their name...) and asking them to add "state specific" requirements to the form.  They also said that if the commission refused (...evidently they have added state specific stuff in the passed...) the state making the request can "litigate" that question.  As OS said, the supremes didnt find a "new right to vote without bein a citizen".  Check the blog post out that's down about a half a page: http://www.ace.mu.nu/

It looks like some politicians are trying to fix this already. I hope they succeed.

Dem's won't allow any thing like this to pass, they've been fighting any & all sort of "voter ID" legislation for decades, it's easier for dead folks to vote for them iffin the dead don't have to show ID.
