I'd be interested to hear from someone with legit knowledge of the matter if the jihadists actually think this type of thing matters or if it was more of a marketing mechanism for people that don't know any better.

I think its interesting.  Just from a logical prospective for you to believe this is effective you would have to acknowledge their religion as correct in this matter.  If you believe one of the other major religions than it doesn't matter what you coat your bullets with there going to a not so happy place anyways.  If you don't believe in any religion than the entire exercise is pointless.
