Need help with survival first aid.

As posted before, I probably would never bug out as I am far in the country with well, ponds, streams, survival seeds, underground shelter and more. I am stocked very well on livestock, chickens, gardens, water, food, and protection items :pleased:

 

My only lacking area is first aid. Can someone reccomend a great starter kit, or all inclusive kit out there? Thanks

This is where I got the one in my go bag/camping backpack. I'll be ordering another soon for the Mrs go bag.

They have them in all price ranges, and if you spend enough time on there you'll find a kit with everything you need in it.

I take a multi-layered approach.

1st layer are my small portable FA kits, that are kept in vehicles, attached to backpacks, etc contain the basic essentials + additional things like mole-skin & GSW trauma stuff like quick-clot & tourniquets.

2nd layer is an industrial sized FA station mounted over my kitchen sink.

3rd is a large "trauma bag" with everything needed to treat severe wounds, stop heavy bleeding, etc

4th layer is a mini-clinic of sorts, contained in a set of cabinets taller than I am with basically anything & everything needed for almost any medical emergency imaginable, well except for prescription medications that is, I have to settle for over the counter substitutes, but I keep it very stocked up on those.

Richard, if you don't mind me asking, do you work in the medical field? I've been kicking around the idea of getting up to speed on my first aid training. Never hurts to know what to do in an emergency situation. Just curious where you might have picked up the experience to go along with all the supplies you've got stocked.

No I don't work in the healthcare or emergency service industries.

I have however attended as many courses as I can find to take & I have aquired & studied as many various medical and pharmacutical books & manuals as I can, I am far from being a "real doctor" or even an EMT, but if a SHTF situation arrises & the emergency services has been temporarily disrupted or has completely collapsed I am as best equiped & as knowledgeable as possible to render immediate emergency medical care to myself, members of my family or perhaps even for my neighbors should the situation become desperate.

I keep both hard-copy books (mini-home library) & more mobile digital copies on an Itouch that I can take with me if we are forced to bug-out, just in case I need to refresh y memory, research symptoms or reference unknown/unmarked scavanged pharmacuticals by looking up pill size, shape, markings or colors.

I don't carry a first aid kit when I hike. My reasoning is pretty simple. Any kit you carry won't be enough for a major injury, and would be too heavy for backpacking. Anything small enough to use a first aid kit for can be fixed with improvised materials. I have bad knees, so anything that goes in my pack, down to the ounce, needs to be used.

 

For the record, I was a medic in the Army. I could treat gunshot wounds and just about everything else with my kit, but it weighed like 40 lbs.

I took a American heartsavers first aid class to help brush up on my first aid. I highly recommend everyone take one to learn the basics.
