Indoor bicycle storage

Recommended Posts

I always keep my bicycle indoors. But now that I a married and have kids , room is very slim inside the house. I am riding again and want some ideas on how to store my bike . I want to suspend it from some cables or hangers from the ceiling but cant figure out exactly how. Of course I can just screw in some hangers to the rafters and hang some cables/rope with J hooks but I just want some different ideas. I did think about the bike stands that sit on the floor but that will take up lots of space.

Any ideas or help is appreciated .

And for you bike guys out there , I have a 2013 Giant Escape Zero flat bar road bike .

J hooks long enough to hook part of the bike frame is the way to go.   Got one in my garage hung like that.  Works well 'cept for banging my head off of it every time I need to pull something out from where it hangs.

J hook will be good for a road bike. My Cannondale mountain bike hangs from one of those cable/tow up types in the garage. PITA for me. Mounting is a pain too. Find two studs to mount a 1x4xwhatever length to then mount the brackets to that. I said many bad words trying to mount it to the ceiling. Pics if you want.

I screwed two big ass J hooks into a 2x9 runs the width of the house.   I just lifted the bike up and hung it off of them.

That's the kind I have too. Mounting was a pain, now that you mention it, but it was worth it. Edited by BigK

Mounting mine was easy( though it is best having a helper) First measure between handlebar and rear of seat, Attach the mounts to a 1/2 -3/4 thick board and mount the board to the ceiling. You need to screw the board to the joists for strength. Use 2 1/2 -3" screws for best hold.

Three bikes hanging from J hooks in the garage at the moment. I'm 5'6" and don't have much trouble with them. The wife's bike has a steel frame and is a bit heavy, but I manage. They hang upside down with a hook in each wheel.

Yes, finding rafters can be a pain, but there's a tool for that. Edited by peejman

I have a stud finder ( no gay jokes, haha) so it should be ok .
