He did not just drop it, the handle broke.  (You can see the remainder of the handle in his hand) Young man showed he could think under pressure and did a great job of recovery

I'm proud of the way he recovered and handled the situation.

That was great and it really cheered me up in an otherwise c@ppy day. If this kid can carry on in that situation, then I have no excuse to be whining over mine. Good job kid.

No, but many active duty and veterans salute the flag during the national anthem whether in uniform or not. I assume that since ROTC/JROTC cadets do the same, it would make sense that this young man reverted to that. Understandable since he was likely a deer caught in the headlights after that move. During that time in my life I would have been so nervous to be in front of so many people due to frequent uncontrollable and unpredictable erections. Now throw a catastrophic failure into the mix, I may have well wet myself with embarrassment. Looks like he handled it well based on his age and experience.

Why he saluted is not all that important. He showed respect and honor which is what both the military salute and heart salute are about. He gets the idea and that is more important than being legalistic, one of our societies biggest problems. Good job kid and I have to say made me smile.

when we did Cub Scouts we would correct kids who were not in uniform and saluted during the pledge.
