Cashed in some cans today, what's up with this?

This is about the 3rd time I've noticed this and I'm starting to wonder what's going on. I took 20 lbs of cans to the metal place, on the reciept it said "Gross=20lbs" "Tare=7lbs" "Net=13lbs" so I got paid for 13lbs(at only .80 a lb I might add.) instead of the 20 lbs that I took in. So what's up with that? Why aren't I getting paid for the full 20 lbs. ? Can someone clue me in as to what's going on here.

Maybe their scale is calibrated wrong? Usually a "tare" is like an adjustment to compensate for the container holding whatever is being weighed. Like say you dump all your cans in a big plastic bin, and they put the bin on the scale, the tare would be the weight of the bin itself minus the cans, which gets subtracted from the final weight. At least thats how I remember it from science class. I'd ask them next time you go.

Ahh, ok. That makes sense. The bin they use is a wire mesh looking deal, can't weight over a couple Lbs. I don't know, maybe it does weight 7 lbs. That at least explains it. Thanks.

They are saying that the container you brought the cans in weighted 7lbs.

I would ask about it next time you go in.

added: you guys beat me to it...

I bring in the cans in plastic bags which I dump into their wire mesh container. Seems like they'd calibrate the scale to the container and zero it out to get a proper read on the cans I bring in. Something just seems fishy.

Out of curiousity how much did you get for the 13lbs of cans? I been thinking about doing some recycling.

Just a quick use of my mental powers deduces that 13 lbs time .80 a lb would come out to -

so I got paid for 13lbs(at only .80 a lb I might add.)

Guess I shouldve paid more attention. My bad. Ill waste more gas taking the cans to be recycled than Ill get in return.

The place is only a couple four miles down the road from me so $10 bucks more then pays for gas and then some. I just look at it this way, it's $10 bucks more then I'd have had if I'd have thrown them away.

You could always donate plasma if your looking for a little extra coin...depending on your size they usually pay $30-40 a poke. I have only donated blood for free to medic but my friends who donated plasma told me it wasnt too bad.

$30-$40 bucks? Is that by the quart?

What about sperm banks?

I did it for a while a few years back. You can go twice a week, and as I recall you can end up pulling about $100 a week. Each donation takes about an hour, so the hourly rate is pretty good. And you get to watch movies, read, or do whatever while donating.

But then the place I went to closed up, and it was the only one in the region. Hell, I haven't even thought about this in a while...

There any sperm banks around here? I figure that if I'm going to masturbate, I might as well get paid for it.

There are two in Knoxville, and I know that at least one looks clean. Now if only I didn't hate needles...
