hey guys i am looking for an advice, due to recent ammo shortage and price i am thinking of getting me a rifle chambered in 7.62x39.

honestly i was never really a fan of AK47 platform but i may consider getting one these days, looking at some rifles i came across a SIG 556R

Any feedback on this rifle would be appreciated also if anyone has a suggestion on a AK47 that i can get ( what should i look for in one, what type, manufacturer and so on).

thanks in advance

if you're looking for something with readily available and cheap ammo you should look into an AK74 .. the 5.45 round is basically the russian version of the 5.56 / .223 round, but the ammo is readily available online and even cheaper than 7.62x39

I would get the AK. The SIG was cool if you wanted to add a bunch of accessories to, but since Midwest Industries released their rail handguard system and numerous companies make M4 style buttstocks, there isn't much of an advantage of the SIG. AK's have more parts available than the SIG and is way less front heavy.

I agree on the AK platform.  7.62x39 isn't really that much more expensive that the 5.45 and is generally non-corrosive as well in its surplus form these days.  The AK has become very modular in recent times and there are several good models to start out with.

What about weight and balance? I almost traded for an SKS recently. It was really heavy (over 8 pounds)  and a lot of that weight was at the front of the barrel so it was  hard to hold to get a steady sight picture. The ARs I've held all balanced fine. How does the 5.45 AK compare?

Suarez is really pushing the Sig for what that's worth. If you want AK performance in a non AK platform and you want to pay a lot more for it (ala the Sig), get an AR in .300 Blackout. You will get more bang for the same bucks. The Sig is trying to make a Sports car out of a 4x4 truck. Neat idea but a waste of money at the end of the day. Just get an AK and spend the saved cash on LOTS of ammo, mags, and accessories.

Sig fixed their issues, but I still don't see an advantage.

SKSs are a whole different beast from the AK. The ONLY SKS worth a flip in my mind is the Paratrooper model that can accept AK mags. Don't get me wrong, they're well built quality weapons but in this modern world, the SKS as a combat weapon is ineffective versus it's many newer competitors. It would be like taking a M1 Garand into a combat zone, yeah, you'd rather have them than nothing but there's a reason why only conscripts are the only ones that use them anymore.

Hopefully you already have an AR of some sort in .223 , get an AK simply for it's hard hit and coolness factor.

I do own 2 AR's and i think i will go with an AK.

thanks

thanks guys,  i think AK is smart choice to go with - even if the SIG fixed all the issues there are so many parts and accesories available for an AK.

Now i need to figure out what type to get,  i was looking at some Arsenal  SGL type ak's i have about $1400 that i can spend on a rifle alone so go ahead and give me some suggestions.

thank you all for help.

Poly Techs are great, but out the ass expensive. If you're looking for something to shoot, leave the Poly Techs to the collectors. If you are wanting the top of the line, and in your price range-Arsenal SAM7R-61. It's the renamed Arsenal SLR-101S. Milled, smooth, accurate. I own one, and it's the best firearm I have ever laid my hands on. I get giddy every time I look at it! The best part is the CHF chrome-lined barrel. It will outlast your great, great, great, great, great grandchildren. http://www.atlanticfirearms.com/component/virtuemart/shipping-rifles/arsenal-sam7r-milled-7-62x39mm-rifl-detail.html?Itemid=0

No problem. If you are ever towards Knoxville, you're more than welcome to try mine out.

It also has the AKM 14x1 LH threads, so there is a ton of muzzle attachment options.
