Anyone ride bicycles?

Recommended Posts

I like that bike, but how do people ride with the seat that high? I know it puts more power to your legs but it killed my shoulders when i tried that. I have to be upright.

It's a torso vs leg length setup.

On my Giant Revel, I have a med frame. Which means in uncertain terms my torso is proportionate to my inseam or lower half for my height. Long torso people generally will be more comfortable with a larger frame bike. This increases the distance from the seat to the bars. So on my bike you will usually see more of the seat post because of the smaller frame, or shorter distance to the bars. This is basic fitment.

Once you find a frame that you are happy with everything else can be moved around up or down for the more advanced rider, or for someone wanting the perfect fit and combination of specific parts. Edited by Tncobra

Wow thats a nice bike. I got a cheap one, but may upgrade the more i get into riding.

Do you guys wear helmets? I bought one cause my wife is worried when i go night riding.

Absolutely. Fifteen years ago, I went for an easy ride to clear the cobwebs. I was in a senior retirement community and didn't plan to leave the community... just a quick 10 minute ride. I went into a cul-de-sac and made a u-turn at the end. I was moving less than 10mph. A mower had chopped up and thrown a foot long section of tree branch on the road. The road was partially shaded. In the dappled sunlight I never even saw it.  It flipped me over the handlebars and I landed on the back of my head.

I was unconcious for a while, but the wheels were still spinning when I looked around. My helmet was cracked, but still intact on my head. I walked home and forced myself to stay awake until my wife got home. I even wrote her a note in case I passed out. I had headaches for weeks. I'm sure I would have either had permanent brain damage or be dead without the helmet.

So...

  • On a short ride
  • in a neighborhood with no traffic
  • with a 25mph speed limit
  • on a dead-end cul-de-sac
  • I had a potentially fatal bicycle crash.

I always wear a helmet. I buy a new helmet every 2-3 years.

I bought a full suspension on craigslist a few years ago because my buddy said he wanted to trail ride and I was all about it! Turns, we didn't agree on what "trail" meant. Mine was dirt and hills. His definition was "green way". Ever try to keep up with road bike while you're on a full suspension? It ain't easy....

Lol my mnt bike is full suspension, but like I said it has road tires.

I average 11 mph. Got up to 20 mph going down hill.

Im sure good road bikes and riders average 13-15 mph?

I average 16-18mph depending on steep climbs. Nothing to see 30+ on steep downhills. I've hit 50MPH coming down foothills parkway, but that was a little too fast for my taste.

Btw is it possible to put quick release handles on my wheels that have the normal nuts?

I'm not sure. Quick release are skewers that run through the wheel hub. Take off the front wheel and see if the bolt will slide out, if so just replace with a skewer. If not, then no :)

Actually I pegged 52 once on a killer hill on US 58. Ass up, head down.
Scary and way too much fun.

Road bikes and mountain bikes are like race cars vs. pickup trucks.   I average about 15-16 on moderately hard rides and I'm a below average road cyclist. When I do my one hour course every week, I average 18-19. I usually sit up when my speed tops 32mph... no sense in going faster and I still have control at that speed.

I was talking to a friend who rides with a group and they average 23mph for their entire ride.  That's pretty good, not professional level, but decent.

I just joined the 29er club myself. In my research it really seemed like the best deal for my budget and actually was the least expensive once I get my $50 rebate back. It seemed to have slightly better components than the competition did.

You might be able to. It depends on the Bicycle. Most of the higher end bikes have the skewers already. Depending on the wheels, I would check with your local bike shop for more info. I know I had it done a time ago before I got my higher end bike.

A way to check this is to take your wheel off, take the nuts off the wheel, see if you can slide the axle out, and if so you may be able to get an adaptor for the skewers.
