Reccomend an inexpensive red dot for Beretta Neos.

As the title states I am looking for an inexspensive but sturdy red dot for my .22. It is mainly just for my enjoyment so I don't need it to withstand tours in the sandbox or anything but do want it to hold zero well and not break in a week. If anyone has experience with the less expensive (under $80) red dots then let me know please! I would really like the "open" style red dots as opposed to the barrel/scope style.

I have a BSA reddot that cost around $25. It is on my carbine rifle and has held up well.

Someone school me on these things. What is the correct terminology to use when comparing the barrel/rifle scope style red dots to the open Eotech looking red dots? Any pros and cons between the two. It probably won't make a difference in my price range but I just don't know. Having that big ol' rail on top of the Neos is just calling out for me to put something on it! haha

Red dot and holographic (Eotech style).  Look at BSA, Tru Glo (I think that's the spelling), or maybe even Centerpoint.  I'll probably get flak from that list but oh well.  If you wanted something better you could probabaly get a Nikon or Bushnell version for a little bit more, but I am not aware of their current offerings or prices.  Up from that would probably be a Vortex Sparc. That's about $200 but it comes with a 2x magnifier and some different height mounts for rails.

Yeah I have been looking at those Vortex. Alot of folks seem to like them. This being my first red dot I am just wanting to keep it cheap but not cheap. You know.... have my cake and eat it too. TTOG had the Barska red dot listed as the best bang for your buck if it was strictly going on a .22. I may give it a shot. For $36 shipped it'd be hard to lose.

The only holographic sights I've used are eotech and a bushnell that is "made by or licensed by" eotech I bought cheap/new/shopworn box at a gun show. I also have a couple of ordinary red dot reflex sights.

 

I like the holographic sights lots better but dunno if any holo sights are especially cheap.

 

The only complaint I have with the vanilla red dots, is that at pistol distances especially, the point of aim can drift if you don't keep the dot centered in the middle of the round view area. If you shoot with the dot on-top of the bullseye, but the dot is near an edge of the round display, rather than close to the center of the display, then the bullet will hit pretty close to the bullseye within an inch or three at pistol distances, but it won't hit the bullseye.

 

I have a cheap BSA red dot has worked great for years, and a slightly more expensive Konus mini red dot works fine (as long as you keep the dot centered in the circle). I think an ordinary red dot might be more of a "no brainer" on a rifle because if you mount the red dot a proper height and distance on a rifle and have good stance and cheek weld, it is a no-brainer to keep the dot near the center of the circle. As long as your head is the right position on the rifle, the dot will be in the center of the circle.

 

It isn't exactly rocket science learning to shoot a pistol and center the dot on the bullseye and also center the dot in the middle of the circle. But it is an easier "no brainer" with a holo sight, where it doesn't matter so much that the dot is centered in the view. There is still some parallax error, but even if the dot is near the edge of the view in a holo sight, you will hit purt near the bullseye.

 

Dunno what other brands qualify as "actual holo sights", and dunno if they are as "parallax immune" as the eotech. I'd guess anything using the holo principle would have less liklihood of parallax errors, but dunno.

 

Another comment-- I've examined several "eotech chinese knockoffs" at gun shows. Maybe some cheap eotech knockoffs are holo sights, dunno. Some of the eotech knockoffs I examined looked surprisingly well built with a clear display, but all the eotech knockoffs I've seen are at best, a well made reflex sight that happens to infringe eotech design patents and sometimes trademarks. Might look like an eotech and might even have a nice clear display and be built OK, but a reflex sight not a holo sight.
