M&P .45 thumb safety issue....

I own an M&P .45 equipped with a thumb safety. I love this thing and it's accurate as hell. My problem is I have a tendency to turn the safety on while shooting as I have a high grip and my thumb get's up under it to the point it goes on.

I've seen modifications to may it stiffer/harder to turn on but nothing to make it harder to turn off. Short of removing it completely (which I don't have a problem doing) does anyone know of a solution? Thanks.

with the setup of that gun, you cannot just remove the safety  I asked a smith rep/armour about that. I was looking at a 45 in FDE, that only came with the safety. I didn't want the safety, but wanted the FDE. I ended up with a black one without the safety.

You were misinformed. Removal of the safety takes about 5-7 minutes and does not impact performance.

To the OP, you're faced with two real options, change your grip or remove the safety. I would recommend the latter, but that is just my 2¢. Edited May 21, 2013 by Chucktshoes

I shoot the M&P like a 1911, thumb on the safety--problem solved.

I've already received the frame plugs from S&W. I think I'm going to reduce the size of the pads on the safety and if it doesn't work for me the safety is coming off. I have 4 other M&P's and none of them have the thumb safety. And you're right...it only takes a few minutes to remove it so it's not a problem doing it. Thanks.

Just a FYI, make sure you pull the safety plunger and spring with the safety. Without the safety, it can dislodge and tie up your sear housing. And be careful with that little spring, it sure can fly.

Agreed, if you don't mind altering the parts and will just change them anyway if it doesn't work out then you might as well try reducing the profile. Maybe a bit of length as well but make sure you leave enough that you can still operate it...would suck to get stuck in the on position when you need it.

I did this yesterday. I removed about 1/8 " off the profile of the safety and tried it out. Now my thumb seems to ride on the top of it instead of creeping under it. It's amazing that that little bit of removal seems to make so much difference.
