They haven't jacked up their ammo prices

Their firearms prices have never been outrageous.  Unlike Gander MTN

Good return policy

Great selection

Helpful staff

But if they didn't some dipstick would buy it all and resell at inflated prices.  They are just trying to take care of their customer base fairly.  I have no problem buying a box of what I want.

Yeah, it wasn't a criticism really.

Was in store in 'Nooga recently, didn't even know they were keeping some of the scarce stuff at customer service checkout only till I asked in gun section. Got a box, mom was waiting in car. She offered to trot in there and get another (she's 88), but I let her off the hook. :)

Personally, think the ID for a gun blue kit is stupid, but I do like Academy Sports.  for all the reasons noted above, plus they have good camping gear there cheap.  Was in there looking for an air rifle or pistol on Friday.  They had a good deal on the Crosman 1377 if anyone is looking for one, $39.  Almost bought it, but I was looking for one in .22.

I like Academy for all the reasons stated above plus a few others. One thing, I have yet to find an Academy that once the purchase is made on a firearm isn't standing there ready to walk you out. (I have waited an hour or longer in Walmart for a manager to show up). Lately (About the last year), I have been buying my Tenner Shoes there, grill, watches, ALL of my fishing gear and any more it's the first place I go (After the LGS's) to look for any firearm I may be looking for, and they usually have it (The one in Jackson has at least a dozen different 1911's in the case when I go there). Prices are competitive.

I also liked the fact that the Company was still in the same family since the 1930's, the owners grandfather owned a Tire Store and sold Surplus guns. But the grandson sold the Company to KKR in 2011. Those are the same people who own Nabisco, Orkin, Del Monte, Duracell and about a zillion other companies either outright or are majority investors. But the owner(s) of KKR are also Americans and try to buy American companies to keep them in the US and have done so since the 60's. (or earlier).

Steve Feinberg is the head of Cerberus. Since Cerberus wants to sell off Remington, Feinberg wants to buy it himself. Last I heard a few weeks ago he was trying to raise Capital to purchase Remington from Cerberus and KKR might be the Investment Company loaning him the money.

If that happens wonder what that will do to pricing (If anything) at Academy.

Academy is my favorite sporting goods store, I have Never had a problem with their staff in any of their stores that I visit in several states. They are always courteous and helpful and they always stock the things that I need

I generally like Academy, although I do find their policy of walking you to the door with a firearm purchase rather insulting.

One note on Gander, try buying a set of handgun grips there.  I recently looked for a set of 1911 grips, asked the guy at the counter where they kept them since I couldn't find any, and was told that they require gunsmithing service since grip panels must be installed.   :squint:

Big fan of Academy. Aside from pricing, their employees seem to like their job and are knowledgable. My wife has picked up a Sig m400 and p238 for herself since the "great panic". The gun counter guy (I wont share name) took time to answer all of her questions even though both firearms would have sold well before the Nashville office opened to run background checks.

I recently bought a Henry AR-7 from Academy.

Even with the minor hassle factor of the manager checking/OK'ing the paperwork and the "LOOK EVERYONE! I just bought a gun!" walk to the front BS, I got the gun for about $50 below MSRP. Saw the same firearm at a couple other shops AND at the Murfreesboro gun show for around $20-30 over MSRP, so I was happy.

Actually, the procedure for buying from them is just about the same as buying from Bass Pro Shops, but usually a little cheaper than BPS.

I got no problem with Academy.
